My fiance and I spent about two to four months apart, depended on how our holidays fell and meshed.  Thank goodness we only did that for a year and a half.

I have been *extremely* lucky.  Our LDR hasn't really been LD for very long.

After we first met we spent a month apart.  Then after visiting for 3 months I returned to the US for 2 and a half months.  Then I was back with him in the UK for 6 months, then away from him in the US for 5 weeks.

Now I'm back again in the UK on a fiance visa, so that  means no more LDR!

We were separated for a while.  The first time was about a 3 month gap.  Then it was 1 month.  Then it was 10 month.  Then we won't be able to see each other for another 6 months when I move.
It's not the money because I travel enough to earn free plane tickets every 2 months.  I'm just a very busy person and my work place doesn't allow too many vacation unless I schedule it 4-5 months in advance (no joke).  He also has school so it's really only around Christmas that we can get together.
We call each other almost very day though.

We met online in December 2005...first voice chat was in February 2006... haven't gone a single day since Feb 4, 2006 without communication, even if just a quick message.

I went to UK for 10 days in March 2006 - First time we met - my first trip out of the US
He came here for 3.5 weeks in May 2006 - His first US visit ever.
I went to UK for 5 days in July 2006.
I went to UK for 10 days in November 2006.
He came here for 2.5 weeks in May 2007.
He is coming here for 3 weeks in December 2007.

Other then the first few trips, we average about one visit every 5-6 months. Although most of the time I whine like a baby about it... I should consider myself lucky to have seen him as often as I have. It's been a rather unusual year for me, so I haven't seen the UK for almost a year now :(  Hoping to move there by March...no later then July 2008.

To begin with it was an average of 3-ish months. This lasted a year and a half or so. This past year it's been 6 months between visits to save money. And it's been awful! Thank goodness for our VOIP phone!  ;)

But my lovely fiance is moving to the UK for good in just under 4 weeks so I'm not complaining any more  ;D
