Dogs being shipped. What can I put in their crates?
« on: November 05, 2007, 04:19:43 PM »
I was going to put a crate liner bed thing, their little doggie blankets so they can stay warm, a nylabone to entertain them.

How do I do food and water?  Does anyone know?

I was only allowed to put blankets and thefood and water in.  The toys were put in a shopping bag and attached to the crate.  It is dark in the hold where they keep them so there is no real oppurntunity to play.  I wasn't all that crazy about not putting anything in with him but he was ok. The good thing that I thought was super nice, was that the water in Dill's dish spilled on his blanket and got them all wet and the staff took out the wet blankets and put newspaper in and put the blankets in a shopping bag explaining what happend.

I froze the water before shipping my dog over, that prevents some of the spilling.  Petco/Petsmart have airline shipping packages you can buy for five dollars, I liked the absorbency of the liner, but still put my dog's blanket and one of my recently worn old tees in his kennel.  Leashes, collars, and any toys are attached on the outside of the kennel.  Hope this helps.

I put the blanket my dog loves to sleep on and a few toys inside the crate.  I also bought one of those water bottles (like hamsters have, but bigger) and trained my dog to use it.  I really recommend them as they only let water out when your dog/cat licks the bottle, therefore no big spillage.

I didn't put food inside the crate, but taped a baggie of food on the crate so they could feed him.

Okay, because I'm a total dork, I found an old t-shirt and slept in it for a few nights before I left, cut it in half, then put half in each cat's crate. It made ME feel better even if they didn't care about it! The people at the airport asked if I wanted to give them each some water. I did, and in the end one cat ended up peeing in the crate. The other one ran to the litter box as soon as we got in the door! Like Zeusy, they cleaned up the wet stuff in my cat's crate and put it in a plastic bag which was thrown away at the next rest stop!
