Wedding/visa
« on: April 09, 2008, 12:13:19 PM »
Just need a bit of help,

I am here, on my fiancee visa, it started 14/2/08. We have to get married so I don't get deported and can stay and Work, yea! We decided that it would probably be best just to get married, like in the states go to the courthouse, and have a blessing/proper wedding (reception family etc) next year. What is the easiest and quickest way to get this done?

Also once we're married I have to do the VAF-4 again right? Once that is submitted then what needs to be done?

I APPRECIATE all help :)
Thanks

I think you can get married in the states if you wanted to (even if that's sort of defeating the purpose of the fiance visa...but people change their mind!), but as you're already here on a fiance visa, why not just get married at a register office in the UK?  It'll be much cheaper than flying back to the states, that's for sure.

If you get married in the States, you'd have to apply for a spousal visa before re-entering the UK.  If you get married in the UK, you just need to fill out form FLR(M) and send that in or make an in-person appointment.
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

Make an appointment with your local registry office and go check it out.  Then you can set a date and book it when its available.

You will need to give 'notice of intent to marry' at the registry office as well.  Heres a bit of info on that. Not all registry offices deal with international marriages so you'll need to find the closest one to you that does.

Best of luck and congratulations!  :)

Click on 'designated register offices' for a register office in your area to give your 'notice of intent to marry'

Thank you! That's so very helpful. I thought I had to do another visa to get married but if I don't that's even better!
Great info on the renewal of vows. I will go over this with my fiance.

Thanks again!

Nope, you do the next visa AFTER you get married--FLR(M).  :)

perhaps this is overkill- but you need to apply for FLR(M) before your finance visa expires.

also- you can't leave the country without first applying for FLR(M) (this is because if you leave, and then enter the UK on your fiancee visa, but you are in fact married, you're in violation) (so no honeymoon abroad without first applying for FLR(M))

also- start saving those docunments for the ILR in (2) years time!
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

Thanks for the help!

I have to start working on the FLR now so I can send it asap once we get the certificate. I did have a few questions if anyone could help answer:

Since I had biometrics for the fiancee visa I do not need to redo them for this correct?

Should I include my birth certificate as well as my passport?

As far as evidence I was a bit confused, it seems like the form is used for multiple visas; how many letters do we need? I'm getting married next month and we're trying to put things in both of our names asap! Do I include 20???

Thank you thank you thank you!

The joint letters / 20 documents is only for unamrried partners.

There are several threads about this application in the visas section.  There is also a note about biometrics which will tell you if you will be called in or not.
