I did a search on 54Mbps and yes, suspected that was the speed of the modem, not the actual line.

I am connecting via wireless, I think it is by Ethernet, yes.

So how do I figure out the actual DSL speed?

p.s. thanks paul...

You need to go to your router's configuration page, then look for the options to display the line characteristics.  The page structure varies from model to model, but it will normally be under ADSL link, Broadband line, or some similar heading.  You can often see the basic line parameters (downstream & upstream speeds) on a status or advanced status page as well.

The full characteristics page will usually also tell you line attenuation, signal-to-noise ratio or noise margin, and transmit/receive signal power.  If you can find these figures as well, they give a good indication as to the line and the quality of the link.

Edited to add:

Here are the figures from my connection, just so you can see the sort of things you're looking for:

Code: [Select]
        Statistics Downstream      Upstream
Line Rate 576 Kbps 288 Kbps
Noise Margin 21.4 dB 22.0 dB
Line Atten. 63.0 dB 31.5 dB
Output Power 16.0 dBm 11.9 dBm

Success:

Quote
Modem
ADSL Firmware Version 6.01.00.12
Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 8128 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps

Yay - looks like 8 Mbps for me!!

I think I was guessing it was slow partly because I was on the husband's Powerbook which is old and not in the best shape, and partly I was fooled by the 54 Mbps.

Hi !

goto http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html

and do a speed test as per the content.

It's extremely rare an 8MB line actually 'gives' a constant 8MB downstream...

I suspect the router's config page picks up the information from the 'line' and displays it - the actual throughput and performance of the line during normal use will probably be less - unless you live next door to the telephone exhange.

I'm looking to change providers soon at home, and am going for the 24MB service from 'Be' although I suspect I'll only actually get '6-7'- MB consistent downstream and maybe 3am it'll bump up to like 12 or 13 MB!!

Post yer results back up here Geeta! make sure u click 'detailed output' and once it's done click on 'i live in the uk and my isp is listed correctly above' - you'll then get a report of your lines 'actual' performance

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

You're correct Dennis.  The rate displayed will be the data rate at which the modem synchronizes to the DSLAM at the central office, in other words the "raw" bit rate.

The throughput in terms of your own data will always be less than the line sync rate even if you live inside the telephone exchange!   ;D

Any communications protocol has a certain overhead in terms of data bits which are needed simply to run the link and keep data going where it should.  Even a very simple system will have an effective bit rate of user data which is less than the actual line bit rate (e.g. some of the old point-to-point teletype systems ran at 110bps, but only 8 out of every 11 bits were actually user data, giving an effective rate of 10 characters per second, not the 13.75 you might infer from the basic bit rate and 8 bits per byte).

When you start getting to the much more complex protocols we're talking about here, then the overhead is that much greater and the effective rate -- as far as user's data is concerned -- is that much less.   With packet-driven systems you have not only the overhead of the bits which need to be added to let the network know the origin and destination of each packet, among other things, but you then also have to allow for packet propagation time with transfer protocols which involve multiple packets and the receipt of acknowledgments.

Basically then, if your line rate is 512kbps, that doesn't mean that you will achieve file transfers at a rate of 64 kilobytes per second as you might infer from dividing the line rate by 8.   Your effective rate in terms of how long it takes to transfer a file of X kilobytes will always be less than the basic line rate.

Here's what I got:

Speed Test Results
Date 22/11/07 06:27:30
Speed Down 6342.06 Kbps ( 6.2 Mbps )
Speed Up 372.62 Kbps ( 0.4 Mbps )
Port 8095
Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk

Not too bad - 6, I guess?  I'm just glad it's not 540 kbps!

Next step is to figure out how to put the WEP or whatever thingy onto the router... :)

Hi

That sounds about right and actually quite good 6MB from an ''upto' 8MB line is pretty good going, most seem to hover around the 4.5-5.5 MB mark...

If your router supports it, you should enable 'WPA' security rather than WEP.....
If yer stuck, call the support people from the router router manufacturer to enable it on that side, and if your wireless card in the laptop/desktop is from a different manufacturer, call them or take a look at their website for step by step instructions on how to setup WPA security, it's 'fairly' straightforward, but sometimes finding the correct place to put settings in etc can be bit of a pain in the jacksie

Good luck!

Hey, after years of having only dial-up available out here, I'm happy to have finally gotten 0.5Mbps DSL.   No more starting a 30MB+ download and having to leave it running while I go shopping!  :)

While you're checking out the security of your wireless link, don't neglect security from the WAN side of things.  I expect your router probably already has NAT enabled, but you can tighten a few other things up as well, such as completely blocking access to all ports except those you need for your applications (port 80 for web browsing, 25 & 110 for SMTP/POP e-mail, etc.).

Along this line...

I'm on a typical 2 Mbps connection from AOL (I'm not at home right now, so I can't tell you the exact figures of connection), but my upload speeds usually only reach a pathetic 20 kB/sec!!  Any tips on how to increase this?  I download a lot of torrents (don't worry, they are legal) and want to be able to seed properly with high upload rates.

If this is off-topic, apologies; I'll shift it somewhere else.

Hi Aless,

I'm not sure you can actually 'do' anything with this from the point of view of the following..

Alot of ISP's operate whats called 'throttling' on the ports known to be used for sharing applications. Even though you may be using legal bit torrents, the vast majority of users are not, so it's a way many ISP's use to ensure their network runs nicely for the vast majority of users rather than the 'sharing' community/users soaking up their bandwidth.

There may be technical reasons for your unusually slow uplink bandwidth, but I 'think' the above is why. However, is other 'uploading' slow as well? to test, use the speed test link in the few posts above here to test. I have a feeling for other 'usage' you're connection will be around the designated upload bandwidth of the package your paying for.

have a rummage around the forums on thinkbroadband.com for more info etc...

hope this helps, Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!

I found the best solution to be 'leave AOL'!!!

Oh yes, AOL isn't exactly noted for helping things to run smoothly.   ;D

Check your actual upstream link speed for a start.  Bearing in mind that all my comments about bit overheads above apply to uploading just as much as downloading, this is going to be the first limiting factor since there's no way you can exceed this speed.    If AOL is actually imposing deliberate restrictions on certain applications (beyond those inherent to the basic communication protocols in use), then you might be able to get around them if you can configure both your software and that at the distant end to use a different port.

On the subject of wireless security, I just happened to come across this earlier:

I guess nobody from this thread is going to be signing!   ;)
