Taking soda on a plane
« on: November 28, 2007, 08:25:34 AM »
It's out of the question for carry-on luggage, but I'm trying to figure out a way to get Mountain Dew to the UK for my bf, who claims that he's never seen it in the UK, but also liked it a LOT when he tried it during his trip to the US.  I found a webpage for ordering Mountain Dew from the UK, but the prices were outrageous, so what I'm trying to figure out is if there's a way to get a cheap 2-liter bottle of Mountain Dew here, take it with me, and not have it explode or leak or anything and mess up my clothes.  Has anyone else shipped soda on a plane before?

I've brought soda over in my checked baggage before - it was fine.  I didn't do anything special to it.  Maybe just put it inside a few plastic bags in case of leakage.  Heck I would bring a few 2 liter bottles if I were you!

My husband is addicted to soda and often packs it in his checked luggage and so far has not had any problems.

The same does not hold true for his carry-on luggage though.  Back when liquids were allowed, he had two bottles of Diet Mt. Dew explode just as they came out from the x-ray scanner thing.  Everyone in the vicinity grabbed their head and got to the ground because it made such a loud explosive sound. The poor security guard standing nearest was soaked.

I've never tried this, but maybe you can mail it?  My MIL sends tons of Chocolate and stuff here through the mail, but hasn't tried soda...

My mother sent us cans of Jones Candy Corn soda for Hallowe'en...!  They arrived fine.

It would be really expensive!

My sister  mailed me 2 boxes of CheezNips and a box of fat hard pretzels and some Reese's P-B Cups and it cost $36!  :o

Yeah, its probably cheaper to buy it in the UK off a website than to ship it.

If you aren't getting a connecting flight in the UK, you could always pic up a couple of bottles/cans at the airport after you go through security.

There's no way I'd give up any of my precious luggage weight allowance for soda!!

At this point, I think I'm going to need an extra bag just for Christmas presents anyways.  I would just buy it in the airport, but I'm leaving from Canada instead of the US, and I'm not even sure if Mountain Dew is big enough in Canada to be in the Toronto airport.  LOL it specifically needs to be Mountain Dew, or as my bf calls it "the Lovely Stuff".

Lupe Pintos in Leven Street in Edinburgh used to sell Mountain Dew ... you might have your boyfriend look in there.

It depends what airport of you planning on flying out of?? I heard that they wont even let you take a bottle of water on a plane much less bottles of soda now in the U.S.

I don't think you can carry it on. Last time I flew, you were only allowed a ziplock baggie full of liquids. I've packed soda before (cans of tango) and never had any problems. I just make sure to put four or five bags around it just to be careful.

I'm pretty sure the OP means to take it on the plane in her checked luggage.

Just as long as TSA doesn't get too aggressive with the looting of your luggage...you'll probably be alright putting it in checked baggage.  I've had several things ruined in the past as the result of the TSA screening/baggage search...the most recent, I'm out two boxes of Jello pudding that they poked holes in -- not too bad all things considered.  The first time it was much worse - sentimental knick-knacks that I wanted to keep got smashed up. :-\\\\
