new here...hello:) question!!!!
« on: April 11, 2004, 07:59:00 PM »
ok, here is a rundown on my situation

I am an RN, US citizen, and my boyfriend is from the UK.  I am preparing to move in with him in December, but my approach to this situation leaves some questions open.  I am just beginning my nursing profession, and by December will only have six months clinical experience.  Some UK nursing companies state that they request their nurses have 12 months exp.  So that leaves a problem with my timing and getting a company to possibly hire me from overseas.

On a visitor's visa, basically just a stamp in my passport that allows me to stay for five months (as it said when i visited in January) you cannot work.  On a fiance visa, you cannot work.  But if I am there, living with him with a visiting status, could i seek employment while in the UK and persuede a hospital, etc. to hire me?

Any input would be greatly appreciated, and i'm sorry if i was too long-winded there.  Thanks!  ;)

The law says that it is illegal to work or to "seek employment" while on a UK visitor's visa.  That means you cannot formally apply for work while on your visitor's stamp.  However, there is nothing stopping you from making appointments and talking to people in a sort of "informational interview."  At least in my opinion--but I am not an immigration lawyer!

Since you're an RN, it might be worth checking the voluminous IND website; I think there are some immigration concessions for nurses, which might enable you to work.

When are you planning on getting married?  You can work once you have your spousal visa, so maybe it won't be too long?

well, we're trying not to rush into the marriage thing, and we haven't really discussed it in depth, which is fine by me..lol.

i've been doing some research and registering with companies, things are lookinga bit more promising. :)

You will not get a hospital to hire you if you are here as a visitor.  You'll be lucky to get anyone to agree even interviewing you if you are not legally able to work right at that moment.

You're either going to have to resign yourself to the fact that you won't be working whilst you're here visiting or as a Fiancee, or seriously look into the IND website (as Emily suggested) regarding the need for nurses in the UK.

This link might give you a better understanding of who can and how to get into the UK to work.
