Health insurance for trip back to the US?
« on: November 29, 2007, 04:03:26 PM »
Does anyone know anything about getting short-term health insurance policies for trips back to the US? A friend is asking -- he wouldn't normally care, but he's going mountain climbing and skiing while there, so something that would cover, say, a broken leg in the US would be useful. :) Any help is appreciated!

I'm pretty sure they'd have to get a policy which specifically mentioned the climbing and skiing.  I've always had good deals through Norwich Union for travel insurance but any of the major firms would be able to help?

How long is he going for?  If it's just a holiday he can get travel insurance.  We have year round insurance and I know my husband got extra coverage when he was going snowboarding one year.  Might be worth finding out how long someone can go back for a visit for on travel insurance.

I go to moneysupermarket.com to find the lowest price for travel insurance.  He'll most likely need winter sports coverage for skiing, but I'm not too sure if mountain climbing would be included in winter sports.

www.moneysavingexpert.com

has an article on travel insurnace.  i'd assume he's need to get winter sports cover, and would have to check if climbing is insured.  may be on the list of excluded activities. check the policy carefully!

check to make sure you don't already have travel cover (either with or without winter sports cover) through your bank.  For example, it is one of the HSBC Premier benefits...and other banks give it to certain account holders as well.

If you can get a bank account with the royal bank of scotland a royalties gold account you can get holiday cover free for you and your family for 90days to the USA the cover is good.

You would need to confirm for anyone looking into this if you have to be a perm UK resident or have citizenship, I know a few people who have this account and they find the insurance very good as it is free, just get a few bills paid through the account to keep it active.
I hope we get better weather with the new year I am getting rained out.

Good luck to everyone with respective visa applications.
