I think in the U.S. or UK, it's considered polite to offer snacks to guests, unless they are just dropping by for a few moments (and to never go to someone's house empty-handed). Nachos are always tasty and easy; we buy Tesco brand tortilla chips (very cheap and tasty), melt cheese on top, and serve with Tesco brand salsa (also cheap and tasty). You can go all out and add ground beef, sour cream, etc. You could also try some of the pre-packaged appetizers and snacks, like mini samosas and spring rolls (they have these in vegetarian if you need that), or mini sausage rolls.

I've done the prawns quite a bit.

I was thinking about it and I'm pretty sure the reason I never had this problem in the States was that if people were coming over, it would be for a full meal. The same would go if I went to somebody else's house. We'd have big blow-out dinners trying to outdo each others recipes.

I like all the ideas people have posted.
Another shameless promotion for www.mclevey.com, the best place on the internet to buy art.
