Showstoppers
« on: April 11, 2004, 08:12:54 AM »
GrnEyesnUK's mention of bannana pudding got me wondering--has anyone made a US dish that absolutely wowed 'em in the UK?  Is it one of your spesh-ee-al-i-tees or a family recipe?  Did you surprize yourself?

I made a beef stroganoff with hamburger and Campbell's soup.  I was amazed at how good it turned out when I used UK sour cream.
When I find a funnier sig than twistedncynical's, it will be here.

Definitely!
I once made a 7-layer Mexican dip for a buffet at my work... you know the sort of thing, layers of refried beans, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, etc... everyone commented positively, and at least 5 people asked me for the recipe.

Outside of the banana pudding, the two things I've cooked that got raves from the Brits were stacked green enchiladas (sauce from scratch) with a fried egg........and marinated BEEF fajitas- most Brits have only had chicken fajitas. In fact, very quickly I've learned that my version of a BBQ [Texas, of course..hehe] is much more appreciated here(honey/garlic chicken, orange chicken, etc, etc).......key word is marinating! lol

My Scottish relatives loved my "boston" baked beans which is a family recipe.  The cornbread went down a real treat too.  Both are embarassingly simple but they just loved 'em.

My husband has yet to snub anything American I've made.  But I think he may be a special case since he'll eat just about anything.   ;D

Latino, Mexican, South American (etc.) food is very popular here in NY. I missed it VERY much in England. A lovely Mexican woman at my old job taught me how to make alot of dishes.

I made alot of dishes in the UK for my boyfriend and he LOVED them. His room mates were 'wowed' that I boiled chicken breasts (to shred up in different dishes.)

Mom is from Italy so Im spoiled by lush, home-made Italian food. Made alot of her specialties while I was over there. Again, my boyfriend loved them (or so he said- did clear his plate and had seconds...?!) Couldnt get over how many 'pasta bolognese' dishes were on menus in England. Never had it before here.

So what's a person to do to get recipes for these wonderful things?  ;D

I have a brownie recipe that I am practically famous for! I've even had young guys ask me for it so they could give it to their Mums! I can now confirm that it's made in Germany, UK, USA, and it's on it's way to Slovenia, France and Chile! I have to say, I rarely find a good brownie in the UK from a bakery, restaurant or store.

I really wish we could have a recipe exchange on here. I'd like all those recipes up there! Please! Leah?!  ;D  ;D
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

My boef bourgingoinne (sp-don't have it written down nearby to copy correct spelling!) certainly wows my MIL-but then, if I may be so bold, it wows everybody, it's fantastic.  My Mom's recipe.

Don't worry, it will be one of the first I post when the cookbook is up!

Oh, a coobook area sounds very nice! I will post some of my Mexican and Italian recipes there... along with my 'unique' (per my boyfriend) vegetarian recipes.
