How to get a fever down?
« on: January 21, 2008, 03:45:52 PM »
My bf is very ill. I spent five hours yesterday with him at the doctors office. They diagnosed him with bronchitis and gave him something for his cough and an antibiotic. This morning his temperature spiked to 102.8.

He's taking ibuprofen, the antibiotic, and the medicine for his cough, but none of them seem to be helping. I don't know what to do at this point. He was up throwing up and coughing most of the night. He's shaking because he's cold, but when i touched his face it felt like it was on fire. (I gave him a cool damp washcloth to put on his head.) I've been coughing all morning and I'm afraid I'm next.

You can cycle Tylenol and ibuprofen.  Take both doses together and then Tylenol every 4 hours and Ibuprofen every six.  There is quite a large margin of error in the recommended dose so you can also safely up the recommended dose as well.

I've found if just one doesn't affect the fever, then both will at least to some degree.

tepid baths, cool wash cloths on the neck and groin area (that's where the largest arteries are and therefore will cool the blood faster).

But basically, there is not much you can do.  The fever is there for a reason and as long as it's not above 103F, then it's not a huge worry.

Thanks for the advice!

I ran to the store and got him some extra-strength, fast acting Tylenol. Temp is down to 99.5 now and he looks much better.  :) Hopefully with that and the antibiotic he'll be back to normal soon.

Crossing my fingers that I don't get it too. I've been Lysoling down the house, lol.

If he has the chills put a light blanket or sheet on him  - just enough for him not to get to the point of goosebumps so the body does not act like it's cold and try to retain the heat. Like the others said - tepid baths and cool washclothes if he does not have the chills.

Tell him to take on as much fluids as he can, stay hydrated, chicken soup is always good. The antibiotics may take a day or two to kick in, the fever will go down once they do.

Just rest - the best thing he can do now.

I'm the one who is sick now.  :-\\\\ I went to the doctor this morning and they did and strep test and a flu test and I was negative for both. they basically told me to take tylenol and go to bed and if I don't feel better in two days to come back.  ::)

I hope everyone is feeling better soon!

She's in the US so she can't get cocodomol or or call NHS direct!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
