A recent post about divorce has caused me to think about my own situation and has me wanting to ensure my own financial security should something happen between my husband and myself. As many of us are aware, when people are hurting and going through something like divorce, sometimes being reasonable is impossible. While none of us want this to happen and thinking about it is not something we wish to dwell upon, I want to know that I’m on the best foot should it become unavoidable.
I find that as immigrants, all of us are a bit more vulnerable than the average Brit. We are far away from our families, often we don’t know where to go for help, and we can find ourselves working within a somewhat unfamiliar government infrastructure. Of course this can be further complicated by our immigration status which causes a certain amount of question and uncertainty, and can have huge financial implications as we may not have monetary resources, long credit histories and references, and in some cases are not listed on important documents such as mortgages and deeds as we found lenders unwilling to add our names.
I’m certain this is a very complicated issue and is usually dependent upon individual circumstances and situations, but are there any set guidelines, principles, or “rules”? How can we best protect ourselves?
