Sky and sound?
« on: February 04, 2008, 07:54:25 PM »
We have Sky in two rooms. In the sitting room, it's great. Today, the other room lost all sound. Is it Sky that caused that? We never put the volume up very high on that TV, I can't imagine the speakers were blown, and it's not an old TV. Is that a common or not unusual problem to have with an extra Sky box? Can I fix it by unplugging the box for a wee while?

worth a try unplugging it. If that doesn't fix it I would call Sky. If they try to make you pay for another box, tell them you can't afford it so think you will just have to cancel sky and they should send you a new one for free if it isn't still under warranty  ;) We have had sky in several rooms at once but not via the extra boxes. We did it ourselves with stuff we bought from Currys. Only downside we had to all watch the same channel so it was really a little poinless I guess  ::) Best of luck!

So it probably is Sky and not the TV (I hope!)? We were gonna do the Curry's route with the extra TV but with kids in the house I am thankful I can send them to the other room for their cartoons every now and then - which makes it worth every penny! :)

Thanks for your input. :)

Just a quick thought. Can you quickly hook a dvd/vcr up to the tv and see if you can get sound on it that way? That would pretty much decide it one way or the other I think.

Yeah, I am gonna unplug the sky and scart and see if the TV gets sound from just the antenna. Looking around the net it seems to be a commonish problem, and since we've had some high winds maybe that is part of it. Now I just have to get up off of this couch and go back upstairs to do it...

Yep, narrow down the cause of the problem first by checking the TV.   Don't forget that it could also be a cable fault.   Are you using a SCART cable from the satellite box to the TV?

Yes, it's scart from box to Tv. Still haven't made it up the stairs yet.

Yes, it's scart from box to Tv.

Easy to check the cable by substitution then.  Take the SCART cable from the non-functioning receiver/TV and temporarily use it to hookup the working receiver to its TV.  If you still get sound on that one, the cable is O.K.

Well, after all said and done, it was the Sky box. Good to know it can do that sometimes. Best thing is to unplug it for a few minutes, and that resets the box. Got the sound back, happy days. Thanks everyone for all your help. :)

Yep, the digital receivers (both satellite and Freeview) can do that.  Lousy software.

Glad you've sorted it out.

It's worth resetting the box periodically - I do it about once a month to prevent such things.

Think about it like a PC, leave it on constantly and it eventually starts running slow as memory isn't always freed up....so a quick planned reset can prevent it screwing up when you want to watch something.

Particularly worth bearing in mind if you have Sky+

Hi there,

Tykeman is correct - I didn't see this post y'day else that's the first thing I'd have suggested. I re-set my 2 Sky recievers aout once every 2-3 weeks, if I forgoet, it's quickly bought to my attention when a short while after one of the household will report 'ohh look that channel isn't working' - quick unplug, leave for 30s seconds to a minute, plug and power back on and all is good!

Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!

Think about it like a PC, leave it on constantly and it eventually starts running slow as memory isn't always freed up....

Which is also due to lousy software.  Windows applications are notorious for this.   There are DOS and Unix systems which don't get rebooted from one year to the next and never have this problem.
