good, cheap curries
« on: February 09, 2008, 06:16:00 PM »
i'm sure i'm not the first person to discover this, but you can get a really good deal on takeaway indian food from the food bar at asda.

dh & i got pilau rice for two, chicken jalfrezi, talka dhal, bombay potatoes, a pack of poppadoms with three chutneys, a pack of naan, a pack of paratha and eight veg samosas all for £7.

couldn't get that from any local restaurant for that price!

I agree it's a good price, but... i wasn't impressed with the food.  To me, the sauces all tasted the same; like tomato soup with a few spices added.   :-\\\\

I've never had an Asda curry but their samosas are OK. We don't have an Asda where we live now but we had some fantastic M&S curries a while back. They were on special at the time so we got tons of food for under a tenner but at full price they'd be about the same cost as a takeaway from a restaurant.  I think I heard they were devised by some top Indian chef, I forget who.

no ASDA or M&S for miles and miles here.

but I keep a couple of jars of Patak's paste around in case I'm feeling too lazy to do a curry up from scratch.

If you want a good curry from a supermarket - look in the chiller cabinet for Mumtaz curries, Morrisons stock them.
Went to the restaurant in Bradford last week, excellent curries, and they also make them for supermarkets, they are the closest to a restaurant curry I've ever found in a supermarket.

Agreed! ASDA doesnt really taste like an authentic curry to me.  We got a takeaway last night with all the things you mentioned (minus the samosas, with onion bhajis instead) for £16 and we had so much leftover we saved it and had it for dinner again tonight (just chopped up some extra meat & onions and used the sauce) and it was EXCELLENT both nights!  :)  So kinda the same price considering we had it two nights.

Asda takeaway food always looks like it has a lot of "gel" in it, like cornstarchy sauces.

I say, get a tub of Pataks Korma Paste, some cheap should of lamb, some onions, some spinich (frozen even) and tin of chick peas, shove them all in the slow cooker...bobs your uncle. A gorgeous delish curry!!!

i've not noticed that, but the only main i've tried is dahl. dh enjoyed the chicken dish, which did have a really creamy & smooth consistency to it.

i can't knock it for a decent budget-conscious weekend treat.

I suppose so...this is coming from someone who has a Chinese every friday night!!! It wouldn't be the start of the weekend without it!
