Stacey, im sorry this thread has sort of veered away from your Quorn question... i hope you got the answers you were looking for!  :)

But while we are talking about chilli, and possibly even retro-chili... does anyone remember the chili block that you used to get in the supermarket?  This is what my mom used to buy... it was a 1-pound (or so) solid block of orangey coloured stuff, and she used to break it up into a pound of mince and add beans... i think that the block used to have all the thickeners, spices, etc in it already, and you just melted it down into the mince, added beans and hey presto!   This was in Southern California... it was in a plastic tray and had a Mexican name and instructions in both English & Spanish on it.

I've never used it myself, but definitely remember my mom using it, and her chili was good!

No worries! :-*

I've never had the "block" but it sounds interesting ;D

I'm excited to try the white chili.  I've see loads of recipes, but yours sounds best IMO.

Does white chili have tomatillos in it?
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

I'd be willing to try chili without tomatoes, but I love tomato based foods so much that I'd probably go back to my own tomatoey chili.

I use Morrisons mince not the Quorn one because the Quorn one has egg in it.  I just dump a load of it in my chili straight from the freezer and let it soak up the extra tomato juice and thicken up the chili.

I dont think it would work for you, Andee, as you're a vegetarian... so you couldnt do the beef stock thing.

Hmmm, you're probably right.  I guess I was thinking of a possible stock from veggie stock cubes, mushrooms, etc.  Wouldn't be the same, I'm sure.

I am currently tucking into a mince and onion pie made with fake mince...very nice.

A few things....

Obviously don't use worcester sauce, Bovril or Beef oxo to make the taste more meaty if you are cooking for a veggie.  You can use veg oxo, HP sauce or marmite to taste.

Also, if you haven't bought the Quorn yet, I recommend 'Real Eat' veggie mince, which is imho nicer and has a better texture.  Also, althought you don't have to cook the mince for as long as you have to cook meat, the longer you cook it, the more flavour the mince has.

There is now a very good Worcester sauce without anchovies.  It's usually in the 'Free From' section of the grocery store.  It's suitable for vegans and vegetarians and tastes almost the same as real Worcester sauce.

I've been searching high and wide for a veggie worcester sauce substitute, with no luck.  Could you tell me the brand name so I can give it a go?

It's called Life free from Worcester Sauce.  It's hard to find.  Look in the Veggie section, but also in the section that's like gluten free stuff where they have all sorts of substitutes.  It's a small brown bottle shaped like Worcester sauce but the lable is brown. It doesn't have quite the kick, but it does have the flavour.

What is in white Worcester sauce then? I've had that (but not recently) and never thought about what might be in it that's different from ordinary old Worcester.
