Documents for Greek Wedding
« on: February 22, 2008, 06:47:50 PM »
Not sure where to find the exact information for this, but I have contacted the Greek Consulate General in London for their input.

Background, I am here from the states in the UK on a work permit.  I am living with my UK fiance in the UK.  We have a wedding booked for Greece 8-8-08.  After we are married, I plan to continue working in the UK and living here as well.

The response from the Greek Consulate was that we need:

Full birth certificate
Decree absolute, if there has been a divorce (not relevant as we have not been married before)
Deed poll, if name has been changed (also not relevant)
Certificate of no impediment, must not be issued more than three months before the desired date of the wedding.  It takes approximately a month to be issued by the Registrar. This is where I get confused, what is this for an American and what do I need to get one.

All documents in English, must be officially certified by The Legalization office, Foreign & Commonwealth Office, Old Admiralty Building, Whitehall, London and then translated into Greek.

Any help or advice is appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

oop I just realised that is for British citzens only.  According to the website for the US Consulate in Edinburgh the US does not issue CNIs so I recommend you ask the Greek authorities to waive this requirement. Apparently Scotland waives it.

Thank you very much for your help, I will definitely look into this and anything getting waived is usually a good thing.

I need the exact same form for my wedding in Germany. Contact the US Embassy in Greece for details. Here is what the American Citizen's Service Office in the Berlin Embassy told me:

When getting married in Germany the German authorities request U.S.
citizens to go to their Consulate to make a sworn statement that they
are free to marry. After issuance of this statement the German
authorities recognize this for six months. You would need to come in
person. Our opening hours are 08:30-12:00 noon, Mondays thru Fridays,
except for German or U.S. holidays. We are located on Clayallee 170,
14195 Berlin.
The fee for this statement is the regular notarial fee which is $ 30,00
or Euro 24,00. Payment can be made in cash or by credit card and you can
wait for the statement to be issued while you are here.
You may want to try to do this in Edinburgh but this may not be
acceptable to the German authorities as the statement we do is in
English and in German.

Best regards from ACS Berlin
