I am American, my husband is Australian. We both live in the UK.

In prior year, when i filed, i filed as "married, filing seperately". It then asks for my spouse's SSN. I wrote a note explaining he didn't have a SS# and they had this long drawn own investigation.

Well, this  year, i would like to avoid the same thing, what should i put as his SS# (obviously he doens't have one). Do i just say i'm single?

What do you all do?

Thanks
-Minyuen

Married, filing separately and write NRA (non-resident alien) where it asks for his SSN/ITIN.  I've always done it that way and have had no problems.

Can you do the same thing with married filing jointly?  And if it is filing separately, does he need to complete the 1040NR?
