Holiday in Norway!
« on: February 29, 2008, 10:45:45 AM »
DH and I are finally getting around to planning a proper holiday.  We are looking at Norway (as it is somewhere neither of us has been) as we both would really like to go.

It looks like they have some amazing biking holidays and the like.  Yay for nature!  However, we would like to combine a bit of biking with a bit of wondering around museums and the like.  Has anyone been?  Can you recommend things to see?  Places to go?  Places to stay?

Thanks!

I happen to have a Norwegian sharing my office right now! I'll ask him for recommendations. :)

I spent a summer in Norway as an exchange student after I graduated from high school and have been back once since. I am dying to go again. I LOVED it! Norway is fantastic for adventure- and nature-lovers but also has some great history and culture. The Oslo area is a great place to start, but if you're looking for more countryside, the area around Lillehammer (the Gubransdal valley) is absolutely stunning. Plus, you have Olympic Lillehammer right there. The Trondheim area is also fabulous, as are the islands in southern Norway. Lyngor is especially beautiful. I haven't been to Bergen, but that is supposed to be the "crown jewel" of Norway with the most beautiful fjords there. And the North is a great place to go in the summer -- that's on my list for the next trip.

I'm so jealous. You'll have a wonderful time!

I adore Norway! If you go to Oslo, be sure and get to the Viking ship museum, it's really interesting.  Be warned though, if wanting to sample authentic Norwegian food, Oslo's not the place - it can't be had for love or money, ironically.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.
