Oyster cards and children
« on: March 13, 2008, 08:35:47 PM »
I'm considering taking the kids to London for their Easter holiday. I was thinking I could save a lot of money but getting a PAYG Oyster card for the Tube but how does it work with kids? Do they have to have their own card? Can I use one card for myself as well as the kids? Does anyone know the current Oyster card fare for adults and kids?

I'm not sure I understand this completely. If children under 11 travel free on London Transport then do the kids need cards? How do they get through the turnstile?

we always just go through the attended gate, then swipe the card, or lift them over at unattended stations.  they are definitely free so you wouldn't get in trouble for climbing.

Either carry them with you as you go through or ask the attendant to let you through the wider gate used for luggage/prams/etc.

I definitley wouldn't try having them follow you through the normal gates or vice versa.  Those things are deadly when they close on you.  Find the attendant and they will let you through the big gate for luggage and prams.

Have fun!!

Thanks everyone. Carrying them through with me isn't an option as I have 3 sons under 11 and one over 11.

Very happy I'll be saving a fortune on tube tix! I bought a pre paid oyster card online which is going to save me even more money.

We do this all the time.  Kids just go up to the gate and the attendants let them through.  They're always really friendly about it. :)
