D'ya think it's worth it?
« on: August 13, 2008, 02:06:57 AM »
hello everyone!
a question for you:
recently (this last february) I decided to make the life choice to start eating healthy and working out. Fast forward to today, I am about 50 pounds lighter and completely addicted to running.
Here is my debacle.

I am going to be studying abroad for the next year at Edge Hill University, which has one of the premiere fitness clubs in the area right on campus. Problem is, it is crazy expensive (about 25 pounds a month so 215 pounds annual). Which for such crazy cool facilities is not terribly overpriced, but I am on a student budget).

Here is what I'm looking at.:

So. Do you think, good people who have experience, that it is worth it to invest in the membership?
Yes, I will be walking and/or biking nearly everywhere, and yes, i can avail myself of the English countryside as often as not, but with inclement weather...
I dunno. I'm having a tough time deciding.

Congratulations on your weight loss!

Granted, I'm not clued up about gym prices outside of London, but that seems like a pretty good price. Would it be possible to join on a month to month basis to see how much you would use it? That would be my suggestion.

It sounds like this is important to you, so I think I would go ahead and do it. I'm very into going to the gym as well, and recently took a hiatus for 3 months, as I'm currently living in Brussels where the gyms are crazy expensive, and I wanted to save my money for other things. I will say, that I miss it a lot, and while I can get my workouts through other means (walking, jogging outside) I really do miss my routine at the gym and am feeling the effects.

honestly, £25/month is on the low end of monthly gym prices.  I think a gym membership is always worth it if you actually get the use out of it and go regularly- I know I'd never go to the gym so it's not worth it for me, but it sounds like it might be worth it for you

That's very cheap.  My nearest gym wants £80 a month  :o - granted, it's a good one but still!

I'm a runner and I hate running in the rain which happens more often than I'd like... if you really hate running in the rain, then a gym membership is a good idea. I don't like running in gyms so i'd rather brave the weather but it's all down to preference.....

Yeah £25 is really nothing; we pay more than that for a council leisure centre, not even a private centre.

Why don't you try your first month without the gym and see if you're able to get enough exercise in in other ways? If that's not working for you, then you can always join the gym later. I've only belonged to one gym in the UK, and I paid about £28 a month, so your £25 doesn't seem unreasonable. But if, as you say, you're on a student budget, that might be £25 you could use for other more essential things. It's all about priorities!  :)

I pay £29 per month for my gym and its lower than anyone else I know and Im really happy with that price.  You'll have a hard time finding a membership for less than £25. I'd say wait til you get over here to sign up tho and see what the gym is actually like. Some gyms in my area are really overcrowded which is why i picked the one i did.

That's totally cheap. I'd try it out at that price.

Yeah, nthing that - £25 is stupidly cheap! I'm paying £30/month at my council gym here in London and that's only because my rates were frozen (apart from £1 or so for inflation every now and then) when I joined 5 years ago...
Summer 97 - first visited friends in London

Sep 06 - WP renewed again (screwed by 4-5 year ILR change)
Sep 07 - ILR!
March 09 - Citizenship!
July 09 - bone marrow transplant :(
18 Sep 10 - wedding!
Mar 12 - half marathon in Paris! 1:47:12!
Oct 12 - Amsterdam FULL marathon! 3:48:23!

I agree, £25/month is really good for a gym membership, especially top tier.  That's quite comparable in price to SIV here in Sheffield.  Its good that they also offer a discounted price for DD, so if you opt to pay that route it'll be £22.50/month.   ;)

Good luck!
