Just wondering if anyone has a success story (or any story, I suppose) about being able to live with their boyfriend or girlfriend while attending school in the UK.

My American boyfriend was accepted into King's College at the University of London and I'd love to join him in September (I'm an American citizen as well). Problem is, I've been pretty disheartened by reading about how hard it is to get a work visa. I don't qualify for the highly skilled worker visa since I only have a Bachelors and I'm not sure whether I should take out major loans and do an unpaid internship. I looked into BUNAC, but will not be able to meet the qualifications since I graduated in Dec. 2007.

I'd love to hear other stories, if anyone else has been in this situation.

Thank so much and happy studying!

To be perfectly honest, if you don't qualify for HSMP and can't get a work permit (which may or may not be possible depending on your specific circumstances and whether you're trained in a shortage field), then your options are very limited.  As in, you probably would need to get married or be a student yourself in order to move to the UK (as far as I know, it's not possible to qualify as an unmarried partner of a student.)
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

when did you graduate with your BA?  are you eligable for BUNAC?

not sure if you need a visa to do an unpaid internship.  my gut reaction is yes.
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

The only way for a student's unmarried partner to come to the UK is in their own right, since the student rules only recongise spouses, civil partners and children as dependants.  If you don't personally fit into any of the student or worker categories, I'm afraid you may only be able to come for visits.

Thanks for the input! The site's wording is a bit confusing, but it looks like for BUNAC, I'd have to enter the country by June 30 since I graduated in Dec., but I wouldn't be able to head over until August. Bleh. It's not looking good for me. I appreciate the suggestions though!
