Funny Immigration Guy
« on: April 10, 2008, 11:02:24 AM »
So yesterday I was coming back into the UK from visiting a friend in Finland.  As I got to the immigration guy at Heathrow I presented my passport with my HSMP visa in it.  This is the conversation that ensued:

Immigration guy: "Any change in visa status?"
Me: "No."
Immigration guy: "Who is your employer?"
Me: "I'm freelance."
Immigration guy: "How long have you lived here?"
Me: "About a year."
Immigration guy: "And do you understand the offiside rule?"
Me: "No, not even a little bit."
Immigration guy: "Good.  You're still American, then.  Welcome back."

One of the big things I love about the UK is the ability to be funny in an official capacity.   :)

U.S. immigration officials can have a sense of humor too.  I still remember one at Newark about 16 years ago who was an absolute scream because my half-brother who was along for the trip had forgotten some tiny detail on his visa waiver form.

"Dinner's on him tonight," he said with a smile, looking at my mother and me.  "And if he doesn't pay you tell me and I'll have the FBI after him!"   :D
