Wii and Wii Fit
« on: April 26, 2008, 01:34:19 PM »
Anyone have a Wii and Wii fit?  I'm going to the states at the end of May and I'm thinking about getting them.   The Wii fit looks like fun and I need to get off my lazy ars*...
Any issues with US versus UK wii?  I'm guessing it probably just needs an adaptor plug right, not a transformer?  Are the games on a disc, are there region issues?  I have no idea about video game systems really, but I hear lots of good things about the Wii system and how its fun for even those of us who aren't good at video games.  And besides the Wii fit, can you get guitar hero for it?
I want to play wii fit games, the brain age games, and guitar hero!  (My ex boyfriend had guitar hero for his X-box and it was awesome!)
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

I got Wii Fit yesterday, it is wonderful.  The games are region coded.  I love Big  Brain Academy, it is a great party game as well.  There is Guitar Hero for Wii (I googled as I am horrible at the game, so don't own it) no advice on that.  Sounds like you have a definite plan.

I also got wii fit yesterday. I am enjoying it and so is my 18 year old daughter. It is a bit slower paced than I expected, but that works well for me!
We also got the wii olympics game and are having a lot of fun with that!

While I'm not certain if there are region issues, there are definite television-signal issues, the UK being PAL, and the US bing NTSC, i.e. completely different ways of putting the picture on the screen.

You can get around this by hooking the Wii to a computer monitor, or to a non-CRT television. I think.

I got mine in the UK as I cannot be bothered to continue getting games that are coded for the states or risk ruining the console by chipping it.  Depends on how lucky you are with technology and gadgets.  Hope this helps!

Because of the power issue, which a converter can fix but would be a pain to deal with, you  would be better off with a PAL (UK) Wii. Also, getting NTSC (US) games would prove more difficult and with the shipping would be so close in price that you'd be better off buying them over here in PAL format. You can get your Wii modded which would enable you to play US and UK as well as Japanese games but honestly, it's not a good idea. I have a freeloader that plays US games (No More Heroes in the US has blood and here doesn't) but eventually Nintendo will upgrade the Wii firmware and then I'll have to get a new freeloader disc so again I wouldn't recommend this.

I contemplated getting a US Wii but after my Dreamcast overheated with a power converter twice, I didn't want to take the risk on a $300 machine so I got a PAL machine here and I suggest doing the same.

As for Wii Fit, it's great and works a treat. Slow yes but that's because if you do it right and aren't all that fit you can hurt yourself.

Guitar Hero is great and worth EVERY penny. I have it for the PS2 and 360 and it's all the same as the Wii version. I got it on launch and still play everyday.

There are a lot of other great Wii games to get too.

If by chipping it, you mean adding the chip, there's a better way of doing it now. You put in a disk, it writes something to the console, and then it's region-free or region-coded to another region. I can't remember the name of it now, but I'll look it up and post back.

That's the freeloader disk. It works now but as you update and Nintendo gets more updated on the pirated discs and such the updates will make it so that this version of the freeloader won't work. It's good but chipping is a bit better at the minute. In a year or two the freeloader that exists will make it better than the chip. Same as the way the Swap Disk is better than the chip in the PS2

I'm just bitter cause Wii Fit costs £69.99 here and $89.99 in the U.S.

Sigh, that's why I wanted a US one, but if there are definite issues with the game format, I may not bother and just have to suck it up and pay UK prices.
Thanks everyone!

Hmm..depends on how you'll use it. Might be worthwhile to get the console in the U.K. but the games in the U.S. and invest in Freeloader anyway. Afterall, if you don't connect the Wii to the internet, they can't "upgrade" you. :)

But obviously that won't be worth it if you'd like to use the internet features alot.

That's the same impression I had when I first tried Wii Sport too. When I'd started I thought that there's no way this would provide a good workout, and before I knew it I was wheezing and sweating.
