Clearing Customs
« on: February 10, 2008, 12:21:32 PM »
I am going over on the QM2, does anyone know if you clear customs in the US or in the UK?  I am bringing over some items (46 inch tv) and other personal things that the cruise allows (anything that can fit in your cabin is ok).  If anyone has crossed over on the QM2 and has helpful information; please let me know.  Thanks

Im sorry I don't know but will your US TV work in the UK? Or if you're going to the US will your UK TV work there? That's a pretty big TV to schlep across and ocean!
Best wishes!

Mr Madeira (TV designer) says, no, the TV won't work, except as a monitor.  Otherwise, I don't know.. ask the QM2 staff?   If you're worried about duty, used stuff for personal use shouldn't have any.

We have a plasma that's NTSC and PAL compatable but that's because it's gas and no lines but even if she had a plasma there would still be the power cord issue.

You will need to clear customs in the UK - as this is the country you are bringing your stuff into.  Your cruise line ought to be able to advise you on whatever the routine is upon arrival.  This link provides relevant info:

http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageVAT_FAQs&propertyType=document&id=HMCE_CL_000308

Including the C 3 form that you will need to complete:  (Adobe Acrobat file)

http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/downloadFile?contentID=HMCE_CL_000308

This is assuming that you are moving your things over here - yes?  As opposed to just a temporary visit.

If memory serves me correctly you should not have to pay duty on anything that was purchased more than six months before entry into the country.

Sharlene, did you move yet? What was your experience with customs? I am taking the Queen Mary 2 as well, from New York to Southampton, and am curious.
