Really Big Problem Part II
« on: June 05, 2008, 05:55:55 PM »
Well, we're back to the starting gate with Lola and the process to get her into the UK legally.  What a fiasco.  We were under the impression that our vet knew what he was doing since he said he'd done the International thing before.  He kept reassuring us, so why wouldn't we believe he knew what he was doing? When he microchipped Lola my husband repeatedly asked him if that was the chip needed by the UK.  He said it was.  Well,it wasn't , meaning poor Lola has two chips in her now, which is traumatic since she's a chihuahua and there's not much there!
Lola got chipped Monday and had her rabies shot afterwards.  June 30th she gets her blood drawn.  It will be overnighted by our new vet to the lab in Kansas State.  Vet #2 gave us a check list and has dated things so we actually know what's going on, when it was done, what is to be expected next.
I didn't bother to pursue a waiver since it was obvious to me that Vet 1 messed up, especially after I painstakingly read the DEFRA/Pets info again.  So instead of preparing to go to London with Lola in July, it won't happen now until probably January.  My husband by then will have 1 year left on his contract there.  :(
Vet #1 is issuing us a full refund as he should.
Not better, nor worse.  Just....different.

Why did your dog need to be chipped again?  That doesn't sound right to me.  Even if the UK port isn't able to read the chip, you can bring a reader with and it should be fine.

Your vet might have said he did the process before, but it is ultimately your responsibility.  I still hope you read up on everything, so you know what should be happening.

Best of luck!

Vet 2 said the wrong kind of chip was used.  When I asked about getting a reader for the first chip they looked at me strangely.  At this point, being told I should be better read, being told it's ultimately my responsibility to ride herd on my vet, being told not to trust what they tell you-I am not taking any more chances.  People do misinform people.  When I pay damn good money to an "expert" to perform a service, I should expect they know what they are doing.  If I pay a mechanic to fix my car, I should expect they know what they are doing and doing it right.  It does not require me to know all about how a car works.
I am tired of being chided about this whole issue.  I've already got enough stress moving my household and starting a new life without people making me feel like an idiot.
Sorry this sounds irritable.  Today I have roofers, a mover, an exterminator, a handy man, an electrician and an window installer at my house-and I sure didn't plan it like that.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but a vet is meant to be an expert on animal medicine, not the rules/regulations of Defra.

I never meant to make you feel like an idiot.  Good luck to you.

I agree. It was a bit like telling someone to close the barn door after the horse has escaped. And it wasn't as if you didn't know the rules either; you had done all your homework. I'm sorry that you came here for a bit of encouragement, and people responded with criticism.

I really fail to see how you criticising people who took the time to respond to her is encouragement.

Remember when you post on a board and ask questions, that you may not always like the responses you receive.

You may want to reread the original thread, as I do not see one post that criticises her, but I do see a lot of good and helpful replies.
