Introduction
« on: April 25, 2004, 04:42:44 PM »
I am a new member of the group and wanted to briefly introduce myself. My name is Suzanne and we currently live in Indiana but will be moving to Darlington later this summer. I am married and we have 3 children - 4, 9 and 10. I am excited but apprehensive about the move. Both housing and schools are a major concern for me. The move will be for a 3 year stint so we will be looking for a place to rent. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Should I just store my furniture here in the states and get new over there or are some things better to bring??

Welcome....I am in PA and will be moving over with my 13 year old daughter in August (still cringe when I say that until that wonderful NY consulate hands me my visa). Since I am not there yet and am moving for good when I go I am not a lot of help with your questions. There are threads on the board about things people wish they had brought and things they shouldnt have. Take your time and browse around, I am sure you will find great advice and am sure many will chime in to help with any specific questions.

Welcome to the boards, Suzanne!  And best wishes with the upcoming move.  :)

As vnicepeeps mentioned, you may have a better chance of advice on moving by posting in the Moving board, though I can't help putting in my 2 cents here:
About your furniture...it's JMO, but I guess part of it depends on how attached you are to what you have now.  Also, you are definitely planning to return to the US in 3 yrs.   I guess part of things would also be weighing the cost of keeping things in storage all that time and buying a whole new set of things for use in the UK only vs. the cost of shipping your US stuff to and from...

Good luck whatever you do!

Hiya and welcome to UKY Suzanne.Iam from KY so guess we are neighbors of sorts  ;D I know it can do your head in trying to figure out everything with moving to a new country.Like someone else mentioned there is plenty of info here, and if you have a question just ask!

I,  too  think it depends  how attached you are to your furniture.

Hi Suzanne.
A great site to look up info about Darlington would be UpMyStreet:
http://www.upmystreet.com/overview/?l1=Darlington

Your three years will go by really quickly. I've been here more than six and there are still things in the garage I haven't unpacked. I'd vote for you to store most your big stuff in the US until your return. You can rent furnished places, and you certainly will want to give consideration to renting electrical things because you won't be able to use them after three years. (I mean bigger things like a TV or washer, etc.)

The thing about moving your stuff is that you'll putting them at risk of being damaged/lost/stolen...three years just isn't worth losing something that means a lot to you. I would, however, bring a few smaller/special things to remind you of home. You'll never lose your roots, and sometimes you might find yourself missing something that you can look at/hold to bring back some memories.

Oh gosh, I don't mean to make it sound as though you won't having a thrilling time here. It's a fabulous opportunity for you! I LOVE it here and have certainly made it my home. I finally feel like I have found where I belong. However, during those first three years, it did help knowing I had something "from home".

So, what I'm trying to say ...  ;) ... for practicality's sake, don't bring over too much; it'll just be a big hassle. For sentimentality's sake, bring over some reminders of home and who you are.

Thank you for the great advice. My husbands' employer will pay to move as well as store things back home for us. I think we have decided to sell or store most of our things and go with new things in the UK...with 3 young children I do not want to rent a furnished place. Then I bring those things back to the US when we are done. At the moment we are having a hard time looking at homes to let...I have spoken to 2 agents and they have not been very helpful...we will see. I appreciate any other suggestions that one can give.
