Registering as a UK citizen?
« on: April 23, 2004, 02:11:28 PM »
Has anyone else registered as a UK citizen by decent in adulthood?

I just submitted my form UKM, registration as a UK citizen by decent through my mother, who is a UK citizen by birth.  I sent it in about a week ago.  I know that's not long at all, but I realize I have no idea how long it may take.

My application should be straightforward -- the only requirement is proof that my mom was a UK citizen by birth and was still a citizen at my birth.  My only small amount of worry comes from the fact that my mom lost her birth certificate, so she had to get a certified record of birth from her home bourough.

My dh will be doing this very thing in the next few weeks, so while I unfortunately don't have any info for you, I certainly understand your fears!

But from what I've read/heard, all these apps are going smoothly, and they will let you know if they need additional info

Yesterday I got all my documents back, along with a letter stating that my application had been forwarded to the Home Office and that these applications can take several months.   Bleh!  I'm not good at waiting!

Several months??  Wow!  Good to know!

Waiting is truly terrible, especially for something so important!  Good luck!

What docs did you send, if you don't mind my asking?  Or specifically, were they originals (ie your Mother's original passport, or just a photocopy?  What about her birth certificate?)

We're getting dh's togather now...and we're not sure if the copies are OK.

I sent all originals of my current passport, my birth certificate, my mom's expired passport, and my mom's birth certificate.  I did get them all back safe and sound; I guess they make their own certified copies to send on to the Home Office so they don't have to keep your documents for those several months!

Good luck to your husband as well!
