Do you mind staying in hostels? You can get private rooms and they are usually cheaper than hotels. (But not usually as nice) I've never stayed in one in Paris (I have a cousin there who lets me crash at her place) but I've stayed at several all over the rest of Europe.

Unfortunately, the only times I've been to Paris have been during a school exchange (so I was staying with a French family about 2 hours away from the city) and during camping holidays with my parents (when our accomodation was a tent in a campsite a few miles from the city), so I can't help much on the hotel front, but I would recommend going for a meal at a Creperie and also visiting the Montmatre area if you get the chance :).

We went to Paris with DS and my stepson last summer and rented a flat. It was way cheaper than a hotel and very nice. Not only was it cheaper it was cozier as we could have breakfast there without getting dressed and going out first, and if we needed to unwind after hours of sightseeing we had a nice living room in which to do so. Unfortunately I can't remember the website we booked from, it was like this one: http://www.pad-a-terre.com/

The only time I've been to Paris, we stayed in Le Fauborg hotel.  It's really close to Montmatre & I quite liked it:

Very reasonably priced and close to amenities.  I was a student on a budget at the time, though, so I can't remember much!!
