Taking my fiddle with me
« on: May 19, 2008, 11:40:39 AM »
I am taking a trip tomorrow and would like to take my fiddle with me.  Due to its delicate nature, I'd like to take it on board with me, instead of checking it.  I'd also like to fly with a small bag (diaper bag sized).  The fiddle is a bit long, but certainly not heavy, I think it will fit in the overheads just fine.  I shouldn't have any issues with BA out of Heathrow with taking these two items on board, I would think... But, I'm a bit worried about my FlyBe flight, but I have had some luck getting 2 items on board and past security at Inverness before.  I'm just worried that if I can't take both the bag and fiddle on board, I'm not going to have any place to stash my wallet, mobile, keys, etc.  I really don't want to check the fiddle.
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

Most airlines allow you to fly with a musical instrument in addition to a carry-on. That said, I don't know about Flybe specifically. You might need to call them.

I see that Inverness is on the list of airports where the one-bag rule has been lifted, so there's definitely a chance. Good luck--I know exactly what you mean about not wanting to check the instrument!

Whatever you do--do NOT check your fiddle!  I have flown with my fiddle as my only bag when there was a one bag only rule in effect and even when there wasn't.  I stuffed that storage pocket til it was bursting with my important papers, cell phone, keys, money, etc.

So if you're worried that you will only be allowed the one bag see how much stuff you can get in the storage pocket and wear a jacket with pockets to take the overflow.  Good luck!

Thanks Andee, I was hoping you'd reply.  Yeah, that was my plan, was to forgo having a hand bag if necessary and use the fiddle as a carry on, stuffing my pockets full if there was any kind of 1 bag rule.
Thanks for the advice, Elynor and Andee! I appreciate it.

Well good news for me! Flybe only lets you take 1 carry on bag aboard, but she saw my fiddle and my carry on bag, and she was like, "Oh no problem with bringing the instrument on board as well", I didn't even have to ask!  ;D ;D ;D
Hopefully I will be as lucky going back through back home.

Excellent!  :)

I have to admit that, having flown with them a couple of times, I wouldn't have expected Flybe to be that sensible...

And that surprised me as well!
Well, no issues coming back through Gatwick either.  Must have just been lucky I think!  And of course, no broken fiddle!
