Adult ADD in UK?
« on: February 25, 2008, 11:00:45 PM »
I was diagnosed a couple years ago with adult add and have prescription adderal which I do not take daily, though definitely helps me stay on track.  I am concerned that adult add/adhd is not considered in the UK and have read that many have to go to extremes to get a prescription.

Does anybody have experience or know of this?

Thank you!

I'm currently grappling with this myself. I'm finding that getting any treatment is very difficult.

It is excluded on most private health insurance plans, though you may find if you have some sort of documentation of your previous diagnosis that your GP might write a prescription.

I have it as well and have heard it is very difficult to get someone who "believes" in it. This is one of my biggest concerns about my move as I am on Ritalin and use it daily. I'll PM you with a forum that has quite a few UK people who would be more than willing to help you out.

I think you will find that many health professionals in the UK do not accept the existance of the condition in children much less adults. You would be better off seeking a support group on the web. Its commonly referred to as ADHD over here. There was a drive a few years back in the media to push it into the spotlight but it receded as most people took the view that ADHD in children was as a result of environment, bad parenting or just the natural variance in childhood behaviour. The general view is that its.."an American thing". No offence mean.t,,,

ADD and ADHD are two different diagnoses, although related.

I'm doing a bit of digging on this for Belita. I'm happy to share what I find out, but it may vary between Primary Care Trusts. At the moment NICE has a draft of their treatment guidelines out for review/comment. Once those are published it will make things a lot more clear cut....
