Wrong address on returns
« on: November 26, 2015, 09:47:39 AM »
I just realized that the returns prepared by my accountant had the wrong address on them.  This is going back for some returns.  I am now worried that I never received any communication.  What can I do?

I am now very worried. I have written my accountant but he is in the States for Thanksgiving.  Would the IRS have contacted him if there were any correspondence?

Was there something about your return by which you expected to be contacted? Normally, the IRS does not respond to returns (especially abroad), even for those concerned with specifics such as the Streamlined Programme.

These two pages may help:

https://www.irs.gov/Refunds

If you were expecting a refund, try the last link.

Guya may respond as regards the IRS contacting professional preparers.

Thank you for your response. The issue with the change of address is that I am not changing addresses.  This is a typographical error that I missed.  Does anyone know of a tax attorney I can speak with.

Would they contact the preparer as his contact details are on the form as well?
I don't know the answer to that question. Perhaps guya or another professional will confirm.

I have to file this return and I don't know what to do,
Always include your most recent, and accurate, address on any return you file. The IRS will update your address. Your Social Security number is the key identifier on any IRS form. Perhaps include form 8822 with the return? Form 8822 can be found here:

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f8822.pdf

I can't get in touch with my preparer as it is Thanksgiving.
Unless you are up against a deadline for filing, don't panic. Wait until your preparer returns. The IRS always moves in slow and mysterious ways. Provided you have the time, waiting a week or three will not matter.

Must the forms be filed immediately?

STOP PRESS: I see you've edited your post.

When filing the form, correct the typographical error. It's still your SSN that is key for the IRS. As regards communication, unless you're expecting the IRS to disagree or question anything you've submitted, they never communicate back when a return is filed.

Thank you very much for your help.  In the meantime, I have checked the FBAR I filed in June and I see that the address is correct on the form,  since I filled it out :)

I understand your point about the IRS not responding but what if they did?  I never would have gotten the correspondence.  I asked the postman this morning and he told me that they are required by law to deliver the post according to the house number referenced even if they know that the person lives at a difference address.   That is why I would like to know if they would contact the preparer if they got no response from me.
