My dh wants to go to Cardiff in mid-July.  Neither of us have been there before.  I'm getting some guide books from the store tomorrow but would appreciate any information, tips, recommendations for lodging, etc.  Thanks in advance.
Not better, nor worse.  Just....different.

I enjoy going to St Fagan's when I go to Cardiff. You can drive or take a shuttle from the centre.

Walking around Cardiff is good. Lots to see.

I also enjoyed the Big Pit as a day trip.

The coast is also nearby and you can drive or take a train out to a seaside town.

I also enjoyed the Big Pit as a day trip.

I'll second that one.  I LOVE The Big Pit.  We've been three times, with three different lots of American family members and everyone commented on how good it was.  I'd quite happily go again!

At the end of their visit, just before my then-18 and 20 year old brothers went back to the US, we asked what their favourite bits of the trip were.  Their response was not what I'd expected at all - not London, not Manchester, not Oxford - but the day we spent at the Big Pit was the thing that impressed them most!
Not MrsRichUK anymore!  :-)

We were in Cardiff in late April/early May of this year.

We stayed here: tyrosa.com
It was great!  A bit of a hike to downtown and/or the Bay, but not too bad.  Also on a bus line.  The hosts were fantastic and the price couldn't be beat.

Stay away from Salt in the Mermaid Quay.  We were disappointed with the food.  Brains beer is delicious!

The Doctor: No idea. Just made it up. Didn't want to say "magic door".
