Litter Box in Cargo

Hi All,

A gentleman at BMI sent me a PDF flyer about travelling with animals by air.  In that document it says the following:

There should be enough absorbent bedding in the container-newspaper alone is not enough for long journeys, but you can use several layers of it with other absorbent material, such as matting.  During a very long journey, this may need to be changed.

Containers for cats should have litter trays which are either heavy enough not to move around or fixed to stop them moving.

Really?     I had not read anywhere else that litter trays are accepted in the carrier, does anybody know the answer to this?

Also.. those with cats.. what did you put in the carrier with them?

It's been some time since I moved over and I may not remember correctly, but I don't think I put a litter tray in with my cat. I know he had a blanket and his favourite toy. (I flew BA.)

I didn't have a litter box with either of my cats. One did pee in the crate on the trip. There were towels and such on the bottom of the crate. The airline's pet people took the towels out and put them in a plastic bag. My cat was welcomed to his new home by getting thrown in the bath! My other cat held it until we got home when she jetted for the litter box!

You'd be needing a pretty big carrier/crate if you want to put a litter box in.  I've always just put a towel in.. and last move I picked up an incontinence pad from the vet.  They're like a diaper, really good.

Same here.  In fact, BA Cargo specifically told me NOT to include a litter box as it would just create more mess.  You're supposed to withhold food for a certain time before you travel, anyway, and they don't have access to food while in flight either so any "accidents" should be quickly absorbed by whatever you're using for liner.

I recently moved my cat 8 hours by *car*, and I lined the bottom of his carrier with a puppy training pad I bought a pack of at Dollar General for $3.  It nicely absorbed his urine, and all I had to do was dump the solids in the toilet when I got to my house.
