UK Biobank Research Study
« on: June 21, 2008, 11:15:16 AM »
Wasn't sure whether to put this under 'Anything good in the post today?' or not - lol!  Cos I never get much post & this was at least interesting...

I've received an invitation to participate in this medical research study:

Anyone else get one?  It sounds kind of cool & non-invasive - not asking me to take experimental drugs (darn!) or anything crazy like that. :P

Ha ha -  no one else!  Probably there are so few of us oldies on here - you're got to be between 40-69 for the study.  They appear to have selected a random sample from the the most basic NHS records - according to birth date (age) & without having seen anyone's specific medical records.

I'm going to do it, because it seems like a good, positive thing.  I made my intake appointment for the end of August.  They will do some non-invasive tests - stuff like blood pressure, body fat percentage, bone density, etc, as well as a blood & urine sample.  I'll get some kind of report about the individual findings for me that I can take to discuss with my GP if I want to.

It doesn't seem like I'll have to do much - they'll call me back at undetermined points in the future if they want to collect further health data & they'll want to know if I develop various diseases over time into old age.  I can stop participation at any time if I choose. :)

My colleague at work got an invitation - which she said was the cause of much mirth in  at the breakfast table as she is a bit of a hypochondriac  (although she does have quite a lot of minor ailments) and her family feel that she now has the recognition she deserves.

LOL!  I'm hoping by participating it will be added incentive to get myself sorted out - my weight and blood pressure, etc.  Only thing about that - poor Steve - if I end up living to 104 years old like my maternal grandmother did... :P  (plus the study might run out of money & steam before then - not expecting us to live so long...)
