Italy & Trains
« on: June 24, 2008, 01:49:34 PM »
Has anyone done sightseeing around Italy by catching the train? are they frequent and is it a good service? Easy to negotiate?  We have American relatives who are going to travel Italy.  They are novice travellers and I am panicing about them.

I've found the trains in Italy to be pretty good.  Definitely more frequent and reliable than trains here in the UK.  They should buy a guide book if they haven't already, most of them explain public transport really well.

Yep, frequent service and easy to get from major destinations. Fair prices too.

I found the trains in italy very easy.  My parents and I took trains from Venice to Florence and then on to Rome.  I have also take a few shorter journeys around Florence (to Pisa and to the outlet mall nearby).  The longer journeys obviously don't leave as frequently, but they have reserved seats and are easy to locate the trains in the big stations.  The more local trains, run much more frequently and can be a little more difficult to figure out which one goes where, but they are still easy enough.  If I remember correctly the little ticket machines could be used in English, so made it easy if you knew what you were doing.  But there were also ticket windows.

ah yes, and don't forget to remind them to validate their tickets in the yellow boxes before they board the train.
