Tribal Wives

I am so loving this show!  Anyone else?

Mostly I love the stuff about the tribes.  As for the British women...  The first episode was great because that gal was a bit of a princess about some things - like when she was worried that her T-shirt might get dirty - lol!  And the second episode - that lady rocked!  She finally got most of her kit off (except her pants) and went native, plus she did just about everything they asked her to do.  And it was so sweet that they married her off to the older (40-something) Alpha male - and he was so sweet too - even though she did have to leave in the end.  I told Steve that I want us to go live there, so we can run around nekkid & not have to worry about modern life... 8)

I'm finding it an interesting series, especially in the sense of the idea of 'modern' and the disconnect with nature.

I just watched the one with the Waorani people of Ecuador on BBC i-player.  Oh my god, I cried when they married Karen and (can't spell his name) the hunter in the hammock--I thought the chant they said was so beautiful, but I think Karen got a bit carried away--she shouldn't have let them marry her.  I cried even more when she had to explain to him that she had to leave and was not coming back.  Can you imagine how sad he was?

From what I understood, she didn't really have a choice/say in the matter.  The tribe decided the marriage would take place & they kind of sprang it on her & that's how it went down.

I understood that the interpreters told her nothing, and she figured it out too late....

Yeah, I guess you're right the elders do decide and I guess they thought maybe once married she would stay...but it was heartbreaking wasn't it?

It was really sad and it seemed kind of like she would have liked to have stayed - but she has her daughters back here still to raise. :-\\\\

Wow.  I just watched it--it made me cry.  It was so powerful; I can hardly imagine how powerful and life changing / healing it was for Lana.

I thought last night really interesting.. The lady involved was way too uptight at first. I couldnt understand why she'd be so upset that they laughed at her. She should've just laughed too! I'm glad she changed at last. I, like her, would've found the forced wedding of that 13 year old very hard to watch.  :-X

The one I liked least was last week's with the Ethiopian tribe - where the men routinely beat the women, female circumcision, etc...I'd have had a really hard time with that.

Last night's was good.  The forced marriage thing was bad, but then when you consider the women seem to pretty much do what they want (entertaining boyfriends, etc when their husbands are away)...maybe... ;)

Yes, and also the fact that the women did the lion's share of the physical labor as well--chopping wood, carrying water for miles, taking down and rebuilding the houses--it was pretty outrageous--and then they got beaten on top of that!  >:( >:(

Hi Mrs Robinson

Thank you for all your comments about the series. I am really glad that you are enjoying it.

I thought you would like to know that the final program has moved to Sunday 27th at 10.00 pm on BBC2. :) I would have been feed up to have missed it!

I feel a great sense of responsibiltiy since I have returned from Ecuador. I have attached a link for you guys to look at. One of the most important things I think I learned was the connections and impact woman can have  to make a difference. You may recognise in this link my brother in law Penti !! I didnt at first because actually this was the first time i had seen him fully dressed. Thats a wierd experience i can tell you.

love Bopo

Wow!  How cool is that?!  Thanks for that, Bopo! ;D

Really all of these women have been so courageous to go into the various cultures - I hope they each realise how fabulous they are to have done something so off-the-beaten track & that it takes a special person to be up for something like that (I say this particularly because each woman seemed to be struggling with her own personal demons or insecurities, and as women - gosh why are we always so overly hard on ourselves?).  It's been a great series, but I still think that Waorani tribe/Bopo episode was my favorite from the lot.  Also, I really agree with mapleleafgirl72's observation about the whole disconnect with nature, here in our modern lives.

Thanks for the info on the time change - I think I had heard that, but wasn't sure when it was being changed to.

I also need to go back & re-watch last week's episode, because I'd had a bit too much wine [smiley=drunk.gif] and dozed off in the second half. :-[

Hiya

The above link leads to a petition to try to help  save the Yasuni  Forest from destruction.

The Huorani marriage is often seen an alliance between tribes and I hope by raising the issues I am keeping my part of the alliance.

regards

Bopo x
