Backing up DVDs

My son has figured out how to open the DVD player and put in/take out the DVDs. We stop him as much as possible but missed it a couple times early on and he's scratched a couple of his movies. Now he can do it very easily and doesn't scratch them. Anyway, I wanted to try and back up the 2 he's scratched. Is this even kosher? When I try to do it, I'm using a UK laptop and one of the DVDs is a US one. So I get a message saying it's the wrong region and won't let me proceed. Do I have any options?

Use Handbrake to rip the disc and burn it to a new disc.

Laptops usually give you 5 chances to switch the region. Handbrake will strip the region settings out of your DVD.

Just to clarify, I'm not actually trying to view the DVD, just make a back-up copy of it. Will look into Handbrake - is that freeware?

Handbrake is free.

I'm in the process of ripping all of our discs to AppleTV format using Handbrake. You can rip the DVDs into several different formats.
