How many lessons before you passed?
« on: July 22, 2008, 08:39:29 AM »
I'm only planning to take a few if possible.  I suppose the instructor will tell me otherwise.  I've been driving for 6 months now in scotland.

I didnt have any lessons besides off my husband... but I started learning in December 2007 and passed in June 2008... but there was about a 6 week wait for a test appointment...  I figured I would just have a go at the test and see how I did.. and if I did horrible then I would get an instructor and if i made very minor mistakes... i would just re-book and brush up on my techniques... but i passed first time so Im glad I didnt get an instructor. Doesnt work for everyone, but I was very fortunate and DH really researched what to teach me for the test.   Good luck :)

Yeah I read that a few weeks ago.  Wish I was so lucky :)  I've heard learners taking 32+lessons!  This country is insane.  They just want money as though they don't take enough from you already.

After 17 years of driving in the states, I still had to take about 20 lessons and I failed my first test! The lessons were really helpful for me. The last thing I wanted to do was to have my husband teach me to drive.

I think I had about 10, and while expensive, worth it.  I am a much better and more aware driver now.  Driving here is more technical (in my opinion) and despite the cost, worth it to take lessons.

I think that learners that start from scratch will probably need 32+ lessons, especially if they've never driven a car before. If you drove in the USA and have been driving 6 months in Scotland, I dont think you'll need nearly as many. Maybe just a few so you know what the test examiner is looking for.  Not looking in mirrors enough and at the right times is one thing alot of ppl get minors for.  Make sure you look in your mirrors TONS.

Yeah, I started from scratch in the UK at 17 and it took me over a year of weekly lessons and 3 tests to pass! I must have had about 50 2-hour lessons and spent over £1000 on them before I passed :o.

However, I was a very nervous/unsure driver and it took me a long time to gain enough confidence, so I wasn't in a hurry to pass the test in as few lessons as possible. On the other hand, both of my younger brothers passed within a few months of turning 17, one took 3 attempts at the test and the other passed first time :), so not everyone needs as many lessons as I did.

7 lessons and passed the first time. Drove in the US 9 years previously.

My husband told me I had to do a few things that were unnecessary (pulling up the hand brake at red lights and double declutching) and my then instructor told me all of that was unnecessary.  >:(

I was so stressed out until I started to take lessons through a certified instructor. He clarified what was needed and what wasn't!

Every instructor must be different as I was told that you should put the hand brake on at red lights.

Mine as well, you should always use your handbrake at red lights. Not that I do...but you are supposed to. I was taught that, you can fail your test if you don't.

This was back in July 2005. I don't remember using the handbreak for every light during my test, just when parked on inclines, as I do now.

The instructor specifically told me it wasn't a requirement, because I made sure to ask. At the time I felt there was so much driving correction happening, I didn't want to add an unnecessary thing or two to make the learning process more complicated.

Anyway, I don't have to worry about it anymore.  :D
