Work Permit
« on: May 19, 2004, 04:44:12 PM »
Hello,
I am currently and American citizen and soon to be married in August. My fiance's mom is British.  She also has Aunt, Uncles and cousins currently living in England. My fiance, Alice, spent most of her chilhood in England recieving education.

We would both like to live and work in England in the next few years. I have been learning about how to obtain a work permit. It seems quit difficult.  My impression is that we need an employer to grant us a work permit before we can come. Is this correct?

Also, does having relatives in England give us a better chance in obtaining a work permit?

What can we do now to help prepare us in the future to obtain a work permit?

Thanx much

Tim

This should be in the Visa section - but a preliminary thought is that your fiancee is entitled to dual citizenship and can obtain a British passport.  Then she would be free to move to the UK and you could join her on a Spouse Visa (once married).

Thanks for the response.

I will check into the visa section.

How would my fiancee go about obtaining dual citizenship?

I don't know the specifics of obtaining it Johnnie (check the Home Office or British emabassy web sites to start), but peedal is right, that'll most likely be your easiest route. I have a friend who is Canadian with a British father. She's also married to a Canadian. She got her British passport and since they were married, he had no problem coming with her. There is paperwork and whatnot, but you shouldn't have to go the work visa route!  ;D
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Here ya go:

I just submitted my application.  It's pretty straightforward, but it will take a few months to be processed.  As others have said, once your fiancee has her citizenship, she'll be free to enter the UK and work there without restriction and you can get a fiance or spouse visa to accompany her.
