The most likely destination for Britons to be arrested was Cyprus...

This would be primarily the result of drunken driving, in Cyprus.  The Cypriot authorities have really started to crack down on that in the last 2-3 years (and good on them).

It's good that they crack down, it's for the safety of the people on holiday as well as the residents and other tourists!

*not an excuse for the majority, but...*

I read a very disturbing article in the Guardian this weekend about some bars in Cyprus selling cocktails known as 'bombs' which contain sprits mixed with cheap industrial alcohol!  Very disturbing!

I wouldn't worry about it tremendously.  I've been to Cyprus a couple of times and had no problems.  However, most of my drinking there is done at my in-laws' holiday flat, in a restaurant, or in a small mountain taverna.  We're too old to frequent the "drink 'til you drop" kind of places that I would suspect are the culprits for that sort of thing.

Also, a word to the wise on the traditional Cypriot spirit:  zivania.  That stuff is strong - typically 45% by volume.  :o  I don't fancy the taste, but if you do - it doesn't take much! :)
