we walk to pick her up (again about 1/2 hr walk one way).
This sounds good to me. burn up calories. visit with your daughter while walking. save money.

I wish I had good public transportation where I live now. I go through between 1 -2 tanks of gas a week, and it costs me $35 to fill up right now. That's easily around $200 in gas every month! I dont have a car payment right now, but my car is slowly dying. It costs me around $150 in gas to drive home and back for Christmas! I could have flown for $200!!!

I just bought a car because I need it to commute and twice a month for work.  Not sure about work yet, but, I've had the car for about 3 weeks.  My husband and I have used it for just about everything (instead of his car, which is on its way out). We fill up about once a week and most of the time less.  We can fill it up for about 20-30 quid and it lasts a good amount.  Once we move closer to work, it will cost me very little to drive.
I am the architect of my destiny.

The bottom line is how much do you pay during a period for fuel.

A fill-up costs me £50.
I drive a car with a 1600cc motor.
I fill up about every 9 or 10 days.

Thanks everybody for the reply. I agree that if we settle in the UK indefinally we would need to buy a car but it is nice to know that it won't be a priority if we only stay a year or so. I definally don't want to live in the countryside ( I am a city girl) so we should be ok.

Hiya!

Petrol prices and mileage!!  I often have 'banter' with my USA family and ex work colleagues about this ! all in good humour of course!!!

For Commuting, I have a 03 BMW 530 Diesel Touring (or wagon!) currently £68ish to fill with Regular Diesel and I get around 400 miles to the tank if I drive err, quickish and thats a mixture of town and motorway driving. If I take it 'easy' I'll see around 450-470 miles out of that tank.
Bro has an 05 2.2 Litre Saab 93 Diesel, £50ish I think to fill and lasts around 450 miles to a tank and if driven relaxingly sees 500 miles out of the tank. We both seem to fill up once a week.
The F150 Truck - err..  £95 to fill up, lasts about 200-230 miles and if driven 'using it's capability' the lowest has been 160 miles ! We usually only use it weekends or going out for various occasions.

Also me mum has a 01 VW Polo Petrol 1.4. It's used for a commute to work of less than a mile, and grocery shopping and weekend shopping excursions around here and some neighbouring areas - £35 to fill and lasts around month for the amount of miles/usage it sees.

I'd love to buy a petrol station!

Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!

Seconded. We live in central London so we don't need a car very often at all, but on the occasions we do (like B&Q and Costco stocking up, or visiting relatives on Christmas day), Streetcar have been fantastic. It's very easy and we've got about four locations within walking distance to us (one has a van, too!) and it works our way cheaper than renting one normally or even owning an old car. My boyfriend is a huge petrolhead and even he raves on and on about Streetcar to anyone who'll listen!
I used Streetcar for the first time today.  I was very happy with it.  I got lost going from SJW to Costco.  I hadn't driven on the "wrong" side of the road for over a year and it took awhile to get used to.

Great service.

In which cities ( beside London ) is possible to live in without a car even if you have children?  How much do you actually drive if you live in a city? Owning a car is so expensive I am wondering if it is worth it?

how old are your kids?  If you have a pushchair to contend with, check with the bus company to see if your route is served by a bus on which you can roll the pushchair off and on.

If your kids are self-transporting, I would think you'd have to study the bus/train schedule in relation to your house/schools/shopping habits, because it can vary a lot.  Depends on how far you are willing to walk to get to  your destination or the public transport.

We own a car, but I don't drive.  Have had varying experiences with the pushchair and public transport, and my only regret in moving out to a village location is that the busses which serve the village can't accomodate a pushchair.   Nor can our train station.   It hadn't occured to me to check these details.
