sick pup
« on: January 05, 2009, 11:48:36 AM »
my 9 month old Border Collie has been a bit under the weather :( we're taking him to the vet tonight, to get a check up, and I have read on the internet but am wondering if anyone here has had a dog with these behaviors.

recently he picks at his food, he usually eats two cups of food a day,  once in the morning then when I get home he eats again. recently he'll sporatically eat, some days one cup, other days his full amount, but it's hard to get him to eat. We've been leaving his food bowl out full incase he wants to pick. I've had to hand feed him his food on Friday morning!!

Thursday night he was hiding under our bed (usually hangs out there but wouldn't come out and was shaking) DH brought him to me and I wrapped him in a blanket and held him. He also panted a bit. I think the poor thing had a fever. So I held him and he fell asleep. I called the emergency vet but it was over 100 pounds to bring him in, the vet said they couldn't diagnose but keep an eye on him the next couple of days then bring him to our vet. Friday morning was the same, shaking, I held him and he slept on me for at least 2.5 hours after sleeping all night. Then I got him to eat. since friday afternoon he has been much improved.

He's been weird with his food for 2 weeks now, but eating eventually and def drinking enough to keep me not worried about dehydration, but it seems to be getting worse as time goes on. He also seems quite thin. I can feel his ribs a LOT more than I used to. We're not sure if this is because he's still growing and hasn't filled out yet, because he's not eating all his food, or a mixture of both. He still looks healthy though and his coat is very shiny, clear eyes, etc. He still plays with me but doesn't seem quite his usual self hence why we're taking him in.

The internet says it could be a small blockage, kennel cough, worms etc.

Anyone experience anything like this?

The vet said that he probably had a bug, was a bit on the lean side, but not bad as far as weight goes. She gave him an anti inflamitory and antibiotic shots and he was much better last night. He gets the second course of treatment tonight, and hopefully will be ok. Other than that she said he was in very good health, teeth, ears, fur, etc. :)
