I'm not sure if I'm reading this right, but are jalapenos not available in the UK?

Because that might be a deal breaker  :P

No, you can buy jalapenos in the UK, it's just that (from what I can tell from reading this thread), other types of chile are not readily available.

THAT'S the brand I found in Belfast!

They're probably something of the "Hatch"/"New Mexico"/Anaheim variety. Proper Hatch chiles, even canned, are lovely, much better than your boring ol' jalapenos. ;) But the bad sort is pretty icky.

The lack of green chile here almost makes me want to go back to New Mexico (almost :P)... but I did bring a couple of cans back with me when I left last week :). By the way, Elynor, I've been meaning to PM you... I managed to get 2 cans of the enchilada sauce you were after (at least, I hope I got the right ones). If you can PM me your address, I'll send them up to you :).

We shipped two cases of Hatch green chile here to London.  Hatch, New Mexico is known for their green chile.  We used to go to their Chile festival held each Labor Day weekend and stock up.  This is the time of the year in New Mexico when the chile roasters are out on the street corners and supermarkets.  You buy your fresh chile and have it roasted right there.  Nothing means Fall to me as much as the smell of chiles being roasted.  Once you smell it you can't forget it.
I loved when we used to drive from Arizona to New Mexico.  You could get fresh green chile on your hamburger for 25 cents extra even at Burger King.
I think I'll have some on a hamburger tonight here in London!!!
What she said. :) Except that I used up my last can in quesadillas tonight. Now I'm a bit homesick...

Hatch chile isn't hotter than jalapenos necessarily, but in New Mexican cooking it's used in large quantities, almost more like a vegetable than a seasoning. Thus it can be quite hot indeed, depending on the growing conditions. It's a different flavour from jalapenos, too, and is highly addictive.

The same chiles, when ripe, are dried and ground into red chile powder that's used for sauces. No tomato in NM-style enchilada sauce--just pure chile! Again, it can be pretty hot!

I've never had a problem getting chillis in the supermarket.  Red chillis, birds eye, scotch bonnet, green chillis etc... are the ones you guys referring to different?

Yes, they are canned.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

After reading all these posts and doing a little more searching, I have found that the green chilis I have been looking for are actually called the Anaheim chili.  They are not hot like the jalapenos. I don't know how readily available they are here.

I also discovered a few more items today that may or may not be found here and one of them is pickle relish.  I asked around and got some pretty funny looks.  I had trouble finding corn meal.  I was told it may be called corn flour but couldn't find any of it.

You can get the Ortega Chilies at Bentalls in Kingston.  The cornmeal you can find in pretty much any grocery store, but it is called Polenta.  I usually find it by the Italian food section.

Cornflour in the UK is something completely different.

You might get corn meal in Eastern European/Italian or African shops.  I didn't know what it was until I looked on Wiki and you may have more luck by asking for polenta.

If pickle relish is hamburger relish then you can get it in lots of places.

i've most frequently seen it marketed as BICK'S hamburger relish.

LisaPower -- earlier in the thread i offered to post you my little can of 'mild green chiles'.

I'm back in Tucson until October.  I'm going to eat my way through Tucson's Mexican restaurants because I've been deprived for two weeks.  Green chile here I come!
Not better, nor worse.  Just....different.

You may find fine cornmeal in Tesco or Morrisons as maize meal.  Steer clear of Branston pickle relish - it has mint in it.  Sweet relish + mint = so very wrong.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

Sorry, I think I was being confusing.  I LOVE Branston pickle.  Just the thing for cheddar, yum!  I just don't like the cucumber pickle relish they make (indeed green and minty).
