getting to the Gatwick ARC without a car
« on: September 23, 2008, 05:25:43 PM »
Anyone able to tell me off hand if I can catch a shuttle to the Gatwick Animal Reception Centre or if I'll have to hire a cab?

My uncle is meeting me at the ARC because I don't want to have him fight traffic just to sit and wait for hours with me.

I've just remembered that I only have about 40 pounds on hand if I have to take a cab.

I'm no help for Gatwick, but at least for Heathrow, I've been told I need to make my own way there.    :-\\\\

On the cash issue, though, a lot of cabs take credit cards -- or you could stop at the ATM as soon as you get off the plane.  I never have cash so it's always my first stop.

I am sure it must be possible - they must provide some form of service I would have thought ??

I found the Gatwick Information Telephone numbers for you tho so you can get it clarified..

We had our car to make our way to the ARC at Gatwick, so I can't tell you if there is a shuttle of any kind right to there (best to call the number as the other person posted) but about waiting, you might want to wait inside the airport, and call them from there to check up on when your animal might be ready for pickup.

We did this; we got off the plane, picked up our luggage from the baggage retrieva area, then went to a cafeteria area next to an information desk. This had all taken about an hour I think already. I asked the information desk if I could call ARC from their phone; I spoke to a woman and said I was calling to see when I might expect to be able to collect my cat, and before I got any further she already said his name! She said they were on his paperwork right now and he should be ready in another hour, then I got directions as to how to get there.

We waited in the cafe area then got ourselves and our luggage onto one of the buses which took us to the long term parking, where my partner went to get the car, brought it to me and loaded us up into it. We had a wrong turn and went around a couple of times before finding ARC (it is not marked at all on the building! But it's right next to the Royal Mail centre).

It was a very small little waiting room with nothing to do, and a family was in there just sitting, which is why I'd recommend waiting in the airport where you can eat and entertain yourselves and even shop, until your animal is ready, not in ARC itself which is tiny and would be very boring to be stuck in, lol. The people were wonderfully friendly though.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies folks!  Unfortunately, my internet got cut off early so I didn't see them until now.

I did go to the Info desk and they said I'd need a taxi.  Cost less than 8 pounds.  The driver took me to the BA Cargo office, but I really needed to be at the PETS office just down the way (next to Royal Mail!!! thanks M_M)

I agree that waiting at the airport would be preferable.  The PETS office is like something out of Brazil - all sterile and secure.  It was a very boring wait (just over 1 hour).

We're fine, however, I don't think my cats will ever trust me again.   :P   Particularly when it comes to their crates.  Before this, two would sleep willingly in them.  Now they are feared and hated...

Good to know you and the kitties got through everything fine, and that your taxi fare was low!

Don't worry, they will forgive you eventually, lol! ;D

Yeah the same thing with the mix up of the drop off points happened to us.  I also agree with your assessment of the office, although the woman who brought out our cat was absolutely wonderful and seemed out of place in that white, concrete block place.

ETA:  To reiterate a point I made about our Great Gatwick Adventure post (in case someone finds this in a search), if you are taking a taxi back to the airport or to the train station after you pick up your animal, make sure you let the people know you will have an animal with you.  It's up to the cab driver to take you or not, but letting them know ahead of time will save hassle.

And you can take animals on trains in the UK.  The National Rail website has details about the regulations.
