Anyway, it's easier to do an American accent because so many American films and tv shows make it around the world.

It's a generalization and not true for every actor. Exceptions don't make it entirely untrue. The point is, it's certainly not the case with American actors doing British or other accents because Americans travel abroad less and foreign films occupy such a small place at the American box office (and just because you watch them it doesn't mean that it doesn't apply to the vast majority of Americans). Anyway, are we not discussing Brit actors specifically? Gong Li and Dominique Pinon would of course be curve balls in this discussion.

I don't know if it's intentional or not, but I think it's funny when some people do american accents form a different time, because they are emulating some old movie.

IMO, Simon Pegg's american accent in Big Nothing was sh*te but I've heard him do really good ones on other occasions.

As an aside, it drives me mad when people ask if I'm going to pick up and "English accent".  I wonder if they know that there is more than one.

I think Renee Zelweger does a bad British accent in Mrs Potter.

I haven't seen House in some time but I always thought Hugh Laurie's accent was a bit affected.  Like he was trying too hard.  Surely there are other actors that do better American accents than him?

When did Michael Caine do an American accent?  I guess I haven't seen everything he's been in!

I think Christian Bale and Hugh Laurie do great American accents...I found out that what ever movie Christian Bale is promoting at the time what ever accent his character has in the movie he uses for interviews. But I have heard him use his regular speaking voice and he has almost a cockney type accent...And I just saw Stephen Moyer for the first time last night on HBO in Trueblood and he is British playing an American Southern Vampire...he did excellent...I think Gwyneth did a good job with the British accent in Sliding Doors...but now that she lives over in England she has a very strange fake sounding British accent...what is that all about?

Although, I think we can all thank Kevin Costner for lowering the bar for all American actors.  After Robin Hood, I think EVERYONE'S British accent is fabulous!

That isn't Christian Bale 'doing' an accent...that is his accent now.

One of the things I love about John (Jon?) Malkovich is that always just uses his American accent instead of affecting one.  At least as far as I've seen.

Like in The Man in the Iron Mask.  Of the three Musketeers, one was french, one was English and the third an American!!  King Louis XIV was American pretending to be English!

Really Vicky...that is Christian Bales accent now? I heard him right around the time of the new Batman movie being interviewed on a morning radio show and he was talking with a thick British accent...I am so confused hehe thanks for clearing that up for me 

Crikey, now I am confused!  He has been in the US since he was about 7, and before that I thought he lived in Wales, and I have heard him give interviews in a US accent!  Maybe he is picking his accents according to his audience!

I do know that he explained being interviewed on TV that he uses the accent of the character he is playing...but on the morning interview they were asking him about where he was born and he had a definite british accent...and he has been interviewed on there 2 or 3 times and he always uses the british accent...I guess he just does what ever accent fits his mood lol
