Should we bring computers with us?
« on: October 09, 2008, 02:07:20 PM »
We are thinking about a move to Scotland and have 5 computers.  Should we bring them or buy ones there?  They are not laptops.  One is a server.  Thanks.

Depends.  How old are the machines?  If you think they will need upgrading in the next 6months -1 year (to keep up with the requirements of whatever you use them for) it may be cheaper in the long run to leave them.  After all, PCs are heavy and will cost alot to ship 5 of them.

Best idea is to scrap them for parts IE decent motherboards, ram, and video cards (which can be packed safetly in a suitcase) and then build your own rigs once you get here, I feel as though that would be the least costly option.

But they are your machines, its up to you how you feel about them.

I agree, it's very much dependent upon what they are and whether you consider it worth the shipping costs.   Computer power supplies (at least on PCs) are generally switchable for 120 or 240V, so power isn't a problem on them.  You might have to use transformers for peripherals though, since the power supplies for some printers, monitors, and other accessories are different for each country's market and are single-voltage.   That's something else you might want to factor into the decision.

We brought over two computers, of which both the CPU and monitors were dual voltage.  Our printer was not, and is hooked up to a power converter.  The problem with printers is that the ink cartridges are not the same as the US, so you will not be able to replace US print cartridges in the UK.  (I say this only looking in stores, and not looking for online options)

You have to wonder what genius decided this would be a good idea.   :(

Stick with an older printer where Model X in the U.S. takes exactly the same cartridges as Model X in the U.K. and you'll be fine.
