Is this possible?
« on: September 19, 2008, 03:40:35 AM »
What if I got a job as a teacher there?  Would I be able to take hubby and kids with me?

My first question is:  Is there a minimum salary I would have to make at the new job in order for all of us to go there?  This is in regards to obtaining a visa, not figuring out if we can make ends meet (we would be able to figure that out once we're there)

Second question is:  If hubby found a job which would support all of us, would I be able to stop working (or work part time) and just have him work?

Thank you so much!

If you get a work permit, he (and the kids) can come as your dependant and will be able to work. However, you cannot then stop working because the permission for your family to be here is based on YOUR job.
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012

unless your husband will be working for one year in UK and qualifies for Tier 1 visa (or gets his own work permit?), then in my understanding you can switch status, so condition on your family stay in UK will no longer be dependent on you.

I don't think you can switch to or from a dependant visa in-country, they might all have to go home to switch.

Bummer.  We were planning on switching over once we got there.

Thanks a lot!

Completely wrong.

As has been said, you cannot switch from dependent in-country.  If you come as a work permit holder, you can then switch into Tier 1 (and your dependents can remain as your dependents), but if your husband comes as a work permit dependent he cannot switch into Tier 1.
