Does my budget seem reasonable?
« on: September 21, 2008, 06:36:01 PM »
My hubby got a raise, so instead of earning 912 after taxes, it's 950. He also consolidated a bit more with his loans. So it's now 239 pounds instead of 295. Eh, every little bit helps. So, do we include a letter from his employer stating his raise? and including a future budget, will this help? and how much is minimum wage...? I'll be 22 in january.

Monthly Budget:

Income after taxes: £950
Private Loans: £239
Rent: £150
Utilities: £50
Cell Phone: £50
Food, Entertainment,Transportation,misc: £431

we included a future budget for hubby. estimating him to be on minimum wage. It cannot do any harm.

I'm not sending my information off until Wednesday, but this is the budget we are including, if it helps at all. Obviously our monthly payments will go up when we get a house, but this is just while we rent a family house out for a few months.

Proposed Monthly Budget
Approximate monthly income after taxes £2500

£450 rent, utilities all inclusive

£200 groceries

£300 petrol and car insurance

£100 council tax (Band C)

£40 mobile phone

£15 internet

£150  contingency

TOTAL: £1255
Total leftover savings per month: £745

Private Loans: £239
Rent: £400
council tax: 95
Utilities: £100
Phone: £100
Savings: £100
Food: £300
Transportation,Entertainment,Misc: £403

I fixed it. My hubby said that with just us 2, the utilities would not be 200 pounds. lol. and I also added council tax.

On the rent, have you looked at places on Gumtree or FindaProperty to baseline your expectations? I don't have much of a feel for the rest of the country, but you certainly couldn't live in London on £400pcm. =/

On the phone, I assume that's for two cell phones and a landline? You can get a perfectly reasonable cell plan for ~£35/month per person and a basic BT landline w/ unlimited UK landline calls for ~£15 (~£15 through SkyTalk, with unlimited calls to the US and some other countries also thrown in, as well - it's another £5 for the same thing from BT).

If your bills includes something for cable, you may want to google freesat. For the price of a box (~£100, non-HD) and a sat+install package (~£80?), you can get a bazillion channels and never have to pay a tv subscription charge (excepting the bloody tv licensing charge of ~£150/year).

You could get a place in London on £400 pcm, Gumtree has quite a few double rooms advertised for £90 per week excluding bills.

Thanks. We are looking for a one bedroom flat or a studio in Wiltshire. We have checked and the minimum I saw was for like 250 pounds. So, I think we will be fine on that aspect. But thanks on the phone and internet/tv stuff. Will definetly look into it. Thanks guys!
