How does car insurance work if my dad drives my car?
« on: September 25, 2008, 03:06:07 PM »
Parents are coming in less than 2 weeks, but because I'm still under the weather they may want to go out and explore without dragging sicko (me) with them. How does insurance work if my dad drives my car? Does his US policy apply? Can he be covered under mine?

Could you call and ask your insurance company?

In the states every policy is different. Any one can drive my car and is covered, but my grandparent's insurance only covers drivers who are 25 or older.

Don't think he is covered unless under his travel policy from the US. You could call your insurance co. and see if they can add him temporarily.

That is correct - insurance in the UK is very different to the US, your best bet is to call your insurance and add him for a few weeks although they will charge for this.  For fully comp insurance you need all drivers named on the policy.  Travel insurance doesnt usually cover you to drive cars.

A bit late adding to this, but yes - you'll have to contact your insurance company and have your father added for one month (that was the minimum length of time my company would do, but yours may be different). It wasn't expensive, though.
