Are you kidding bookgrl? Other immigration forums are simply bulging with stories of Brits being used for false marriages to get visas. The people on this forum are no doubt genuine, but lots of people coming over on spouse visas are not.
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012

But how is getting this id card going to stop false marriages?

You still need to prove now that your marriage is "genuine" by giving evidence.  So unless they are planning on shackling you to your spouse, having an id card won't really help that.

Edited to add:

I suppose they could start stopping people on the street, checking id cards, and then demanding that they and the spouse appear at the police station within x number of hours to "prove" they are married.  That will be a lot of fun.

Well, something would eventually get me out of retirement and it was Biometric ID Cards...  GAWD!  I thought I was going to be able to avoid a trip to Croydon in November/December to get my SET-M, but I suspect I am now stuck.

Lucky me... Just in time to be one of the first to get the new cards.  I guess I will have to write the whole experience down to share with everyone.  I will have to keep up to speed too and see if there are any tidbits going on.  On the one hand, I am just looking forward to not having to carry two passports around with my old visa in it anymore and getting asked by Borders where my partner is all the time.

I think the cards are actually logical, though effective and sercure is still debatable in my mind...

kitsonk's FLR experience at http://www.londonelegance.com/transpondia/flrexperience/index.html is one of the most sought articles on FLR anywhere.  Even earning praise from the High Street!

But having an ID card just stops people from lying about their identity (theoretically), not their intentions!

Well Spouses of UK Citizens are potentially ripe for fraud and fraudulent marriages.  Also, they can be ripe for benefit fraud.  Now most of spouses here (including myself) are not even going to come close to those issues, but those that are so inclined to cheat the system make it bad for the rest of us legitiment.

Depenendant spouses of other immigrants can have quite a few restrictions placed on them which could be abused.

By far, the "cheats" attempt to "steal" other peoples IDs in order to get to stay under some pretext.  While I economically can understand why they would want to stay in the UK, I do believe people should follow what rules are the rules and borrowing some elses utilities and the like to secure illegal employment is still illegal.  To be able to prove that I have the rights I do, I welcome though it is a hassle.
WARNING My thoughts and comments are entirely my own.  Especially when it comes to immigration and tax advice, I am not a professional.  My advice is to seek out professional advice.  Your mileage may vary!

OK Vicky.
Am re-posting the same here as the previous posts in this thread didn't answer the question I had. That's why I started a new thread, but I guess that was a mistake.
Sorry about that.
So here is my question, once again....

I was reading the BBC story showing the look of these new things and wondered if those who already have marriage based ILR's will be required to get them. Anyone know?

Here's the link to the story and the quote that lead to my question:

Quote
Both types of migrants will be told they must have the new card when they ask to extend their stay in the country.

Of course you will need to get one!  So will I, so will the local newsagent, so will the policeman, the lolly lady, and everybody else, Brits and foreigners alike.  The only difference is the timetable.   So unless you are somehow different from everybody else, you will need one.

hi guys,
gary u mentioned that only ppl applying for FLR(M) and FLR (S) for november 25 th , will have to get IDs sorted. (for now)

but why is there conflicting info on this website?
http://www.ips.gov.uk/identity/faqs-foreign-choice.asp

the reason why i asked is that there's another thread in another forum where ppl are misleading other members and telling them  taht everyone has to get an id now even if you are appying /have ilr.
how do u convince them it is not what they it is?
or maybe not bother cos they are quite *the know it all* type
thanks

It isn't conflicting - it says "whent he scheme starts" and it has not rolled out for all people yet.

Posted with Vicky....

That page on the IPS site has to do with the overall program.  25 Nov has to do with the first tranche of who is affected.  Also running concurrently is the postal code roll-out.

As to what the peeps on another forum are saying, ignore them.
