Trains in London (Not Tubes)
« on: October 08, 2008, 08:51:41 PM »
This is kind of an odd question. I'm taking one of my work mates to London on Saturday.  He's a train nut.  He hasn't been able to go since his Dad died in June so he's REALLY looking forward to it.  We plan to go from Waterloo East to New Cross by train, have lunch and travel back.  We're also going to get the train from London Bridge to Charing Cross because I know it's a cool view over the bridge.  Does anyone know of any train rides in that area that are fun and worth doing?  Or any other train rides in London for the future?  Things we could do on a travel card.  Thank you, thank you.

I used to always like to come into Victoria from south of the river, going by the Battersea Power Station.  It's such a cool building, and of course there's that whole Pink Floyd thing.

Oh! That would be cool.  I think I can see on the map how to do that too.

Did you know there was a steam engine museum in Brentford? You can even take a train to get to it. Just go to Kew Bridge station.

The DLR (covered by the travelcard) from New Cross to Bank through the Docklands is an interesting ride.  There is loads to see from the big windows as you glide through the Docklands, over the water and through Canary Wharf.  Greenwich is also a great lunch stop. Have a look at www.tfl.gov.uk - there's a free Time Out guide to the area for ideas.

We often took visitors back into central London on the ferry from Canary Wharf.  You get a good discount if you have a travelcard.

DH really likes to look out the front of the Docklands Light Railway. He is a big kid.

I just realized that I actually have two adult tickets to that museum that I won in a school fete raffle! I had completely forgotten.  Thanks.  I will definitely do that.

That sounds cool.  Destination doesn't matter as much as the journey! ;)

He'd love that.

Be aware of closures.  The Jub and North London line closure will certainly make the DLR a lot more crowded this weekend.

If you are going from Waterloo East to New Cross, you could do a lot worse than to break  your journey at London Bridge and spend half an hour or so watching the trains go in and out. London Bridge is a very large and busy station and the sheer number of train movements is well worth watching. Clapham Junction is even better.

Thanks.  I hadn't thought of that (the whole train thing is new to me!) but I will definitely do that.  :)
